Sydney, Oct 26 (NationPress) Senior Indian opener Rohit Sharma expressed immense appreciation for the rigorous preparation he undertook prior to embarking on the ODI tour of Australia, which culminated in his impressive match-winning score of 121 during the third and final ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground, leading the team to a nine-wicket victory.
After stepping away from Tests and T20Is, Rohit had limited game time, particularly since he hadn’t participated in any matches following his IPL 2025 campaign with the Mumbai Indians. Furthermore, he transitioned the ODI captaincy to Shubman Gill just before the series against Australia.
Rohit dedicated significant time to enhancing his fitness, successfully shedding nearly 10 kgs through a demanding regimen, alongside adhering to a strict nutrition plan. He also focused on honing his skills at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru and under the guidance of former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar in his hometown Mumbai.
“Throughout my career, I never had a span of four to five months to prepare for a series. I wanted to maximize that time. I approached my preparation on my own terms, and it paid off well. It helped me understand my requirements for the future,” Rohit shared.
“Utilizing that time was crucial since, as I mentioned, I have never had such an opportunity before. I prepared thoroughly at home. While the conditions differ greatly between India and Australia, I have played here often, so it was about finding my rhythm and adapting to the requirements here.”
“I credit my preparation before arriving here, as I invested time in myself, which was essential. It’s vital to recognize that there’s more to life than just professional obligations. With ample time on my hands, I made the most of it,” he remarked.
“Being able to work on my own schedule was invaluable. I am extremely thankful to those who supported me,” said Rohit, who was awarded the Player of the Match in the third ODI and also earned the Player of the Series title, as highlighted in a video on bcci.tv.
He also lauded the Australian crowds for their unwavering support and acknowledged the vibrant atmosphere created by fans throughout the series, marking what could be his final international appearance in the country.
“Whenever we play, the fans come out in numbers to support not just us, but the entire team, which is wonderful. In Australia, the crowd is always remarkable. They turn out in large numbers for quality cricket, and that’s what we witnessed with these two teams,” he said.
“Unfortunately, we couldn’t clinch the series, but we cherished our time here. I am truly grateful to the crowd for their continuous support in Australia. They have been outstanding,” he concluded.
“I hope they keep that spirit alive. We have a T20I series coming up on October 29, and I wish the best for everyone representing the country as we aim for a great occasion,” he finished.
