Vizag, Oct 13 (NationPress) India’s head coach Amol Muzumdar expressed his concerns regarding the dot ball issue following their defeat to Australia in Match 13 of the Women’s World Cup. He mentioned that there had been an extensive discussion on this topic during their pre-match preparations.
Alyssa Healy showcased an impressive performance, leading her team with a spectacular century as Australia clinched a thrilling three-wicket victory, successfully chasing down 331 runs with one over remaining. This win marked a historic achievement as they recorded the highest chase in women's ODI history.
India's bowling attack has faced significant criticism following disappointing performances in their recent matches against South Africa and Australia. In the match against South Africa, the team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, seemed poised for victory until Nadine de Klerk made a late impact that shifted the momentum.
During the match against Australia, the bowlers struggled from the start, failing to maintain pressure or secure crucial breakthroughs to curb the scoring.
"After the last game, not this one but the one against South Africa, we had a prolonged discussion regarding our approach to batting innings, particularly about the dot ball percentage. Over the past year and a half, we have been playing very aggressive cricket, and I thought today was a good display," said Mazumdar to reporters.
Mazumdar also acknowledged the stellar performances of two Indian players who have been like seasoned veterans throughout the World Cup: Kranti Gaud and Sree Charani. Charani, just 21 years old, stood out as one of India's best bowlers against Australia, taking 3 wickets for 41 runs in her 10 overs. While Gaud's performance wasn't her peak, she has had an impressive campaign overall.
"They have been exceptional. If you observe Kranti Gaud bowling and Sree Charani against Australia, she gave away around 40 runs in her 10 overs while claiming important wickets. They are both exceptional, youthful, and energetic on the field and in the dressing room. We gave our best effort in the field," he noted.
"Everyone will agree that our fielding has improved significantly today, which is a major takeaway. They were committed, and we played well, but unfortunately, we lost this match. To answer your question, Kranti Gaud and Sree Charani have been phenomenal," he added.
India will consider any necessary tactical changes to prevent a third consecutive tournament loss, including whether to introduce an all-rounder into the selection mix and how to better conclude innings.
Regarding the team’s sixth bowling option, Mazumdar stated, "After this game, we’ll evaluate the situation, and I’m confident the team management will have a thorough discussion about possibly promoting an all-rounder. We’ll make an informed decision as we approach the next match," he explained.
Mazumdar also commended Australia for overcoming a competitive Indian side. "Kudos to Australia; they batted remarkably well. The way they started and ultimately reached 330 runs with one over to spare was a phenomenal achievement. While we attempted to build pressure, they are seasoned players who have been part of the same team for nearly 10 years. So, credit to them for their magnificent batting, in my opinion," he concluded.
