Visakhapatnam, Oct 13 (NationPress) South Africa's captain Laura Wolvaardt praised her teammates for their resilience as Bangladesh exerted pressure during a gripping Women’s World Cup match in Visakhapatnam on Monday. Wolvaardt highlighted the contributions of Marizanne Kapp, Chloe Tryon, and Nadine de Klerk for guiding the team to a crucial victory.
Kapp played a steady innings, scoring 56 runs, while Tryon supported her with a vital 62. De Klerk then delivered a thrilling finish, hitting a four and a six in just three balls to clinch the win with three balls to spare.
South Africa managed to reach 235/7 in 49.3 overs, successfully chasing down Bangladesh’s total of 232/6. This score was built on a solid half-century by Sharmin Akhter (50 off 77) and the record-breaking ODI fifty by Shorna Akter (51 off 35), who became the fastest ODI fifty scorer in Bangladesh's history. Despite an early collapse that saw South Africa at 78/5, Kapp, Tryon, and de Klerk rallied to secure the match.
“My nerves were shot; it was closer than we preferred, but I’m glad we secured the points. Kappy and Chloe were exceptional. We didn’t start the way we wanted, and while we aimed to build partnerships, we lost too many wickets. It’s reassuring to see our middle order scoring runs,” Wolvaardt shared in the post-match presentation.
Wolvaardt expressed frustration at not taking early wickets against a disciplined Bangladesh side but commended her bowlers for applying themselves. She also praised Shorna Akter for her impressive innings, which allowed Bangladesh to post a competitive total.
“We aimed to remain patient and executed our slower balls effectively, but it was frustrating not to secure early wickets. Shorna was outstanding at the end,” she remarked.
Despite the heartbreaking loss, Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana Joty expressed pride in her team’s determination. She noted they fell short by 10-15 runs.
“I’m incredibly proud of how we battled until the last ball. Our team is very young, and we fight for every run. It was a valuable learning experience. We’ve struggled with early wickets in the power-play and aimed to form solid partnerships. Perhaps we were just short of what we needed,” Joty explained.
She praised Shorna Akter for her fantastic performance, helping Bangladesh score 82 runs in the last 10 overs after being at 150 in 40 overs.
“I have been speaking about her for a while. The way she played was delightful and demonstrated how we should approach our batting,” she added.
Joty also mentioned that they had discussed their bowling strategy, expressing satisfaction with the team spirit displayed. “We talked about maintaining the right length; we may have faltered, but the spirit was commendable. My team is young, yet we persevered,” she stated.
She encouraged her team to take pride in their efforts, despite suffering their third consecutive defeat. “Be proud of what we've achieved; we still have three matches ahead of us. The way we played, we provided them a tough challenge in the middle,” she concluded.
