New Delhi, Oct 11 (NationPress) Captains Harmanpreet Kaur of India and Alyssa Healy of Australia engaged in an insightful discussion about the deep-rooted rivalry between their teams as they prepare for an important showdown on Sunday. This match will take place at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Vishakhapatnam, marking the 13th encounter in the Women’s World Cup.
India's quest for their inaugural ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup title encountered a hurdle following a thrilling three-wicket defeat against South Africa in Vishakhapatnam. The focus now shifts entirely to this crucial match, with Harmanpreet & Co. gearing up for a challenging battle against the reigning champions.
The captains, accompanied by India’s vice-captain Smriti Mandhana and Australia’s star Beth Mooney, discussed the escalating rivalry, the mutual respect forged through competitive encounters, and the challenges that lie ahead.
In an interview with JioStar, Kaur expressed her views on the formidable task of facing Australia, stating, “I believe you are always at a disadvantage if you do not play aggressively. Competing against Australia pushes us to excel as they challenge our limits. Overcoming Australia is always tough yet rewarding. My teammates and I cherish playing against Australia.”
Australia clinched the last World Cup title in 2022 under the leadership of former captain Meg Lanning. Healy, reflecting on her team’s history and the rivalry, shared her thoughts on the expectations as they defend their title.
“I was reminded before coming here that Australia has never lost a World Cup in India, so, no pressure at all! I fondly recall the 2013 World Cup, where I served as a drinks runner at the Cricket Club of India. It was surreal to be part of that journey, and I hope we can achieve similar success this year. It’s surprising to hear that we are regarded as favorites for this tournament,” Healy noted.
She added, “I think it should actually benefit India to pursue the trophy at home. They are quite comfortable in their own conditions and are well-positioned to challenge us. With both teams facing each other frequently, the rivalry has flourished. We understand how much India desires to triumph over Australia, and we are equally motivated to assert dominance here. This contest has grown intense over the years.”
Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana also spoke about her longstanding and friendly rivalry with Australian all-rounder Ellyse Perry. Remarkably, the two have played together for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru franchise in the Women’s Premier League since its inception in 2023.
“The rivalry between me and Ellyse Perry will persist until one of us retires. There will be moments when I outscore her, and moments when she dismisses me. Ellyse Perry is a true legend of the game. Observing her in franchise cricket has significantly influenced my development as an athlete, particularly regarding my aspirations,” Mandhana commented.
Australia’s batter Beth Mooney also shared her insights on India’s strengths and expressed her respect for Mandhana, stating, “Smriti approaches the game with intensity, executing exquisite cricket shots; she is an extraordinary player. Without a doubt, she will lead from the front with her batting, and I anticipate her strong performance throughout the tournament. Her ability to play the pull shot exceptionally well and her knack for picking lengths are qualities I admire.”
“I consider India a well-rounded team right now. They have impressive spinners like Sneh Rana, Deepti Sharma, and Radha Yadav, along with a fine mix of youth and experience,” Mooney concluded.
