Yorkshire, June 17 (NationPress) Pakistani cricketer Abdullah Shafique has officially joined the Yorkshire County Cricket Club on a temporary contract to participate in both the County Championship and the Vitality Blast throughout the upcoming month.
The 25-year-old arrives at Headingley following a remarkable performance in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), where he helped the Lahore Qalandars clinch the title and finished as the fourth highest run-scorer with 390 runs across 13 matches. He played in the number three position during that tournament, and fans of the White Rose will be eager to see him in action in the latter stages of the Vitality Blast.
"I'm thrilled to have this opportunity with Yorkshire and can't wait to join the team ahead of an important match against Nottinghamshire," Shafique shared.
"Headingley is a venue I've always dreamed of playing at, and I'm looking forward to experiencing a Roses fixture that I've heard has an amazing atmosphere! There’s so much history with this club, and I hope to make a significant contribution during this critical time of the season for the team," he added.
Shafique is set to play two matches in the Championship against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge and Essex at York later this month. He has scored over 100 runs in 11 of his 41 first-class matches, including five times in 22 Test appearances.
He boasts two first-class double centuries, one of which was during a Test match – 201 against Sri Lanka in Colombo in July 2023. He has represented his nation in 52 matches across various formats. Notably, he scored 102 runs in the memorable Multan Test last October, where England triumphed thanks to Joe Root's 262 and Harry Brook's 317.
"Abdullah is a technically proficient, all-format player, and we are ecstatic to welcome him. He possesses an impressive skill set and has tallied significant runs at the top level," stated Anthony McGrath, Yorkshire's head coach.
"This is a fantastic addition for us that will greatly enhance our squad. We are all excited about Abdullah joining us next week," he continued.
Yorkshire has also secured Australian allrounder Will Sutherland for the T20 Blast and County Championship matches during the June/July span. Furthermore, New Zealand fast bowler Will O'Rourke is under contract, having participated in seven of his eight scheduled Blast matches. The club initially anticipated his contribution to the Championship as well.
At present, Yorkshire finds itself at the second-to-last position in Division One of the County Championship and is currently at the bottom of the North Group table in the Blast.
