Kabul, Feb 1 (NationPress) Afghan police have discovered 170 kg of illegal narcotics from a vehicle in the Herat province of western Afghanistan, apprehending two suspected drug traffickers, as stated by the provincial police office on Sunday.
Acting on a tip-off, authorities stopped a car on Saturday and, during a thorough search, found 170 kg of opium and hashish concealed within hidden compartments of the vehicle, the statement revealed. It was noted that the two individuals in the car were arrested for allegedly trying to transport the illegal substances to an undisclosed location.
Following initial questioning, the detainees will be transferred to judicial authorities, according to the statement reported by Xinhua News Agency.
The police reiterated their commitment to preventing any production or trafficking of illegal drugs in the province.
In a related incident last week, law enforcement in eastern Khost province seized 18 kg of hashish and apprehended a suspected drug trafficker.
In December of the previous year, Afghan police arrested eight individuals accused of drug production and smuggling in the northern Jawzjan province, according to Tolo News. The operations conducted by the provincial police led to the arrests and the confiscation of a substantial amount of illicit drugs, including hashish and heroin, found at sites connected to the arrestees.
These arrests are a part of ongoing efforts by Afghan authorities to combat the illegal production, trafficking, and distribution of narcotics nationwide.
On November 14, 2025, Nizamudin Omir, the provincial police spokesman, announced that authorities had detained a suspected drug smuggler and confiscated illegal narcotics during an operation in the northern Takhar province. The suspect was reportedly caught while attempting to transport crystal methamphetamine and other chemicals used in heroin production to Taluqan, the provincial capital, where he intended to sell the materials.
The suspect has been taken into custody for further investigation, the spokesman added.
