Three young children drowned in a village pond at Chegayadih village under Jamtara Sadar police station limits in Jamtara district, Jharkhand, on Tuesday, 29 September, officials confirmed. The tragedy has plunged the small village into grief and adds to a grim toll of at least 15 drowning deaths recorded across Jharkhand in September alone.

How the Incident Unfolded

According to local residents, the three children had gone out together to play during the afternoon hours and wandered toward a pond in the Chirkutola area of the village. The children fell into the water while playing near the pond's edge. Villagers who learnt of the incident rushed to the spot and pulled the children out, but all three had already died by the time they were retrieved.

Police from Jamtara Sadar police station arrived at the scene after being informed of the drowning, conducted a preliminary inspection, and initiated the process of sending the bodies for postmortem examination. An investigation is underway, officials said, to determine the exact circumstances that led to the drowning.

The Deceased Children

The three victims have been identified as five-year-old Aryan Ansari, son of Jasimuddin Ansari; approximately six-year-old Nasir Ansari, son of Tabarak Ansari; and approximately six-year-old Amar Sohel, son of Sajawuddin Ansari. All three children belonged to the same village and were known to each other. Grief-stricken family members were inconsolable, with local residents gathering at the site to offer condolences and support.

A Broader Pattern of Drowning Deaths in Jharkhand

This incident is not an isolated tragedy. At least 15 people have lost their lives in separate drowning incidents across Jharkhand this month — in ponds, rivers, check dams, and other water bodies. On 23 September, five people drowned in the Koel River in Palamu district during Karma Puja celebrations, while a 16-year-old girl also died during the immersion of a Karam branch in Nani Jharia on the same day. Additional drowning deaths this month have been reported from West Singhbhum, Dhanbad, Gumla, and Godda districts.

The pattern points to a persistent absence of safety barriers, warning signage, and community supervision around water bodies in rural Jharkhand — particularly during festivals and school holidays when children and crowds gather near rivers and ponds. As postmortem procedures are completed and police conclude their preliminary inquiry, the focus will likely shift to whether local authorities take preventive measures ahead of remaining festive occasions this season.
