Chandigarh, May 23 (NationPress) Following an exhaustive eight-hour interrogation at his residence, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau took action on Friday by apprehending AAP legislator Raman Arora from Jalandhar Central. This marks the third AAP lawmaker facing serious allegations of corruption, specifically regarding fraudulent municipal corporation notices and extortion activities over the past three years.
Reports indicate that his arrest is connected to a corruption investigation involving the former Assistant Town Planner for the Municipal Corporation of Jalandhar, Sukhdev Vashisht, who was detained the previous week.
Arora, who had his security detail rescinded by the government on May 12, is accused of collaborating with Vashisht to generate fake notices and pressure numerous local residents for money.
The Vigilance Bureau executed a raid on Arora’s residence following multiple complaints lodged against him.
The AAP stated on X: “(Bhagwant) Mann sarkar’s significant action against corruption. No one is above the law -- not even those within the AAP. Vigilance conducts raids on MLA Raman Arora over fraudulent Nagar Nigam notices, extortion, and digital swindles. This exemplifies genuine accountability.”
In defense of the arrest, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema emphasized that AAP’s foundational mission is to combat corruption. “Corruption, in any guise, will not be tolerated, whether it involves individuals within our party or outside. Unlike previous administrations that protected the corrupt, AAP guarantees accountability and justice through decisive measures.”
In addition to first-time lawmaker Arora, the Vigilance Bureau had previously arrested former health minister and Mansa MLA Vijay Singla on May 24, 2022, and Bathinda (Rural) AAP MLA Amit Rattan Kotfatta on February 23, 2023, both on corruption allegations.
According to the Vigilance Bureau, despite having approved 70 percent of building plans in the vicinity, Assistant Town Planner Vashisht had declined to clear specific files unless bribes were provided. “One complainant reported that Vashisht demanded Rs 30,000 to process his application,” a spokesperson from the Vigilance Bureau stated.
“To intimidate applicants, he allegedly threatened to seal buildings during inspections. He also reportedly claimed that he was unafraid of any potential transfers,” the spokesperson added. Following an initial investigation, the Vigilance Bureau filed a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act against Vashisht and subsequently arrested him.
