Kolkata, Dec 27 (NationPress) The General Secretary of Trinamool Congress and Lok Sabha MP, Abhishek Banerjee, has thrown down the gauntlet to the Election Commission of India (ECI) to promptly release a distinct list of 1.36 crore voters flagged as cases of "logical discrepancy" due to the ongoing progeny-mapping process.
Banerjee further stated that he intends to initiate a “gherao” of the ECI headquarters in New Delhi if this list is not made public.
“I will meet the Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, on December 31 to press for the disclosure of the separate list of "logical discrepancy" cases,”
Banerjee asserted.
The voters identified as "logical discrepancy" cases are those linked to unusual family tree data revealed during progeny-mapping, including instances of voters fathering children at age 15 or younger, grandfathers at age 40 or younger, and voters with parents sharing identical names, among others.
These "logical discrepancy" cases will be summoned for hearings during the second phase of the claims and objections process concerning the draft voters' list, which commenced on Saturday.
In the initial phase, “unmapped” voters—those lacking connections to the 2002 voters' list through self or progeny mapping—have been called for hearings.
At a press conference on Saturday afternoon, Abhishek Banerjee posed two critical questions regarding the "logical discrepancy" cases.
“How could the commission determine the figure of 1.35 crore "logical discrepancy" cases within a single day based on data collected by booth-level officers over a month? Why is the Commission selectively leaking this data via WhatsApp instead of issuing an official press release?”
He also accused the ECI's Director General of Information Technology, Seema Khanna, of being involved in the issue.
Banerjee questioned Khanna's authority in this electoral revision process.
Additionally, he inquired why the Commission did not extend the deadline for the SIR process in West Bengal, while allowing such extensions in other states conducting similar revisions.
“The people of West Bengal are suffering due to the rushed nature of the Commission’s revision process. A total of 51 individuals in the state, including several booth-level officers (BLOs), have attempted suicide due to the SIR in West Bengal, with 45 fatalities. Notably, 29 BLOs have made suicide attempts,”
Banerjee disclosed.
He also criticized the elected BJP Lok Sabha members for their silence on the Union government's failure to release funds to the West Bengal government for various Central-sponsored welfare initiatives.
“They (Central government) were elected by the people of West Bengal, thus they have a responsibility to advocate for their constituents,”
Banerjee concluded.
