New Delhi, Jan 3 (NationPress) On Saturday, billionaire Elon Musk stated that his brain-computer interface company, Neuralink, has the potential to restore full body functionality. This groundbreaking advancement targets the motor cortex, aiming to regain complete bodily functions for individuals with severed spinal cords.
“At this moment, I believe that the restoration of full body functionality is achievable through Neuralink,” shared the visionary behind Tesla and SpaceX in a post on the social media platform X.
“Neuralink essentially facilitates communication from the cortex, bypassing the damaged nerves in the neck or spine. From a physics perspective, it is feasible to physically restore full body functionality,” he elaborated in a video release.
The motor cortex technology was unveiled by Musk in 2022, with human testing commencing the same year.
The device comprises a chip that substitutes a small section of bone and connects to the brain through a network of thin, threaded electrodes. According to the company’s website, the N1 implant features 1,024 electrodes distributed across 64 threads.
In September, Neuralink revealed that it had successfully implanted its device in 12 patients.
Furthermore, on January 1, Musk’s California-based neurotechnology firm announced significant progress towards restoring vision, utilizing a brain implant designed for the visually impaired, including those blind from birth.
Neuralink's brain chip, known as Blindsight, received the “breakthrough device” designation from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in September 2024, with plans for high-volume production set to begin this year.
“Neuralink aims to initiate large-scale production of brain-computer interface devices and transition to a highly automated surgical procedure by 2026. The device threads will penetrate the dura without requiring its removal—a significant advancement,” he noted on X.
Musk asserted that Blindsight could enable individuals who have lost both eyes to regain sight. He also mentioned that, if the visual cortex remains intact, the device could restore vision even in those who have been blind since birth.
