Congress and AIMIM Demand Action Against Fake Godmen After Ashok Kharat's Arrest
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, March 21 (NationPress) The Congress party and the AIMIM have called upon the Maharashtra government, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), to launch a comprehensive investigation and implement strict measures against fraudulent godmen in the wake of the uproar surrounding the arrest of self-styled godman Captain Ashok Kharat.
The outcry from the opposition comes after the resignation of Rupali Chakankar, a leader from the Nationalist Congress Party, from her position as Chairperson of the Maharashtra State Commission for Women. This resignation followed orders from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis due to her alleged connections to the ongoing scandal.
Chief Minister Fadnavis issued the directive just two days after Ashok Kharat was apprehended in Nashik on allegations of sexual harassment and rape.
Chakankar serves as a trustee of the Shri Shivnika Sansthan in Sinnar, Nashik, where Kharat holds the presidency.
A controversial video surfaced recently, depicting NCP leader Chakankar washing the feet of the accused godman.
Congress leader Husain Dalwai criticized Chakankar, stating, "This is the same individual who used to shield Baba Ashok Kharat with an umbrella and wash his feet." He further remarked, "Numerous reports indicate that up to 50 percent of our Ministers in Maharashtra have frequently visited him."
Expressing concern over the vast wealth amassed by Kharat, Dalwai questioned, "How did he acquire such significant assets? Where did his money originate? All of this must be thoroughly examined. Why did this situation persist for so long?"
Dalwai insisted on the necessity of taking stringent action against individuals like this 'baba' who exploit the common populace.
Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant expressed his dismay over such occurrences in a state like Maharashtra, which is supposed to be progressive.
Additionally, Sawant accused the ruling MahaYuti leaders of being complicit with the fraudulent 'baba' Ashok Kharat.
He stated, "Individuals are donning the guise of fake gurus and perpetuating superstition within society. Under the BJP administration, these figures have garnered considerable attention and political backing."
Reiterating allegations against Chakankar, Sawant noted, "Despite her role as President of the Maharashtra Women’s Commission, she is entangled in superstition. Her responsibility should be to guide Maharashtra's women away from such falsehoods. If politicians themselves get ensnared by these fraudulent 'babas', how can they lead the public out of such beliefs?"
AIMIM National Spokesperson Waris Pathan also called for an extensive investigation into the situation.
He stated, "Numerous allegations exist, and a viral video has surfaced. The Maharashtra government must conduct a thorough inquiry into his actions with women. The truth needs to be revealed to the public."
