Opposition Demands Accountability for Ashok Kharat's Supporters in Maharashtra
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, March 23 (NationPress) The opposition coalition, comprising the Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT), has urgently called for significant repercussions against prominent officials and ministers who have allegedly shielded the Nashik-based self-proclaimed godman Ashok Kharat, also known as the fraudulent 'Baba', who has wreaked havoc under the guise of religion. This was highlighted by Congress Legislative Party leader, Vijay Wadettiwar, during an adjournment motion in the state Assembly, which also insisted on the resignation of implicated ministers and officials.
Despite Speaker Rahul Narwekar denying the adjournment motion, he permitted Wadettiwar to elaborate on the matter.
Wadettiwar expressed grave concern over the allegations of sexual exploitation against women by Ashok Kharat, a self-proclaimed astrologer. He remarked, “In Maharashtra, a state that boasts a legacy of progressive ideals, the current proliferation of superstition, coupled with the political and administrative backing it garners, is a profound disgrace. Ashok Kharat, who claims to be a divine incarnation and deceives individuals using astrology, has over 100 disturbing videos surfacing. Such deceitful personalities are harming Maharashtra’s reputation.”
Wadettiwar further revealed alarming details regarding a clandestine meeting among three high-ranking officials at a hotel, aimed at ensuring no action was taken against Kharat. Reports suggest that revenue and police officials were actively working to prevent his arrest.
He emphasized that the situation involves not just Kharat but also IAS, IPS, and Revenue Department officers.
“It is a tragic irony of democracy that those who swear allegiance to the Constitution are seen venerating such fraudsters,” he noted.
“Simply forming a Special Investigation Team will not suffice. The resignation of implicated ministers and the suspension of involved officers are imperative,” he asserted.
Wadettiwar demanded a review of the Call Detail Records (CDR) of all accused and suspected officials, alongside formal charges against ministers and constitutional figureheads who have lent social credibility to this fraudulent baba, along with immediate suspensions for officers found to be protecting the accused.
Former Speaker and Congress MLA, Nana Patole, echoed the demand for stringent action against Kharat and his associates. Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA, Bhaskar Jadhav, remarked that the Kharat controversy significantly tarnishes the progressive image of Maharashtra, urging the government to take decisive action against all involved.
In response, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed that the government has initiated an investigation and assured that action will be taken against the fraudulent godman Kharat.
