Nisha Bhagat death: BJP alleges 'murdered by system' under Hemant govt, JMM vows action
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Tribal activist Nisha Bhagat, who allegedly died by suicide in Jharkhand after going live on Facebook, has set off a sharp political confrontation, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accusing the Hemant Soren-led government of systemic failure, and the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) pledging strict action against anyone found responsible. The death has drawn national attention to longstanding concerns over the safety of tribal activists in the state.
BJP's Allegations: 'Murdered by the System'
Union Minister Giriraj Singh on Saturday called Bhagat a fearless tribal woman who had dedicated herself to protecting tribal land and girls. He alleged that the state government had repeatedly ignored her need for security despite multiple attacks on her. “Nisha Bhagat was a fearless daughter. Her mission was to protect tribal land and tribal girls. She sacrificed everything for this cause. She was attacked not once or twice, but several times. However, the state government failed to provide her protection,” Singh said.
Singh also trained his sights on Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, questioning their silence on the issue. “Today, Rahul Gandhi is silent. Priyanka Gandhi is also silent. She used to say, ‘I am a daughter, I can fight.’ Where is that voice now? Nisha was also someone’s daughter. I want to ask Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi why they are not speaking on this issue,” he said.
BJP spokesperson Pratul Shahdeo went further, flatly rejecting the suicide narrative. “We do not believe that Nisha Bhagat, who stood against Christian missionaries and religious conversion, died by suicide. She was murdered by the system under this heartless Hemant government,” Shahdeo alleged. He pointed out that Bhagat had gone live on Facebook shortly before her death, during which she allegedly spoke about the harassment she was facing and accused government-linked individuals of targeting her. Shahdeo also noted that Bhagat had, in the same livestream, clarified she had no association with the BJP or the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
What Bhagat Said in Her Final Facebook Live
According to reports, Bhagat conducted a Facebook Live shortly before the incident, in which she said she had been fighting alone for a long time and felt abandoned. She expressed concern about the grief her actions would cause her parents. She also voiced anger at being labelled a ‘dalal’ and alleged that no action had been taken against those tarnishing her image.
Bhagat had reportedly spoken to the officer-in-charge of Pithoria police station shortly before the incident. Leader of the Opposition in the Jharkhand Assembly, Babulal Marandi, stated that in her live video, Bhagat had named Chief Minister Hemant Soren, the officer-in-charge of Pithoria police station, and Ajay Tirkey. The BJP has formally sought a response from Soren and demanded immediate action against those named.
JMM Responds: 'No One Will Be Spared'
JMM leader Manoj Pandey expressed grief over Bhagat’s death, calling it “deeply painful and unfortunate.” He acknowledged that Bhagat had been critical of the government but said that did not make her an adversary. “She was a tribal daughter, and great potential was seen in her. Criticising the government or our leader is a different matter. She used to criticise us, but this is a democracy, and everyone has the right to do so. It does not mean she was our enemy,” Pandey said.
Pandey assured that the investigation would be fair and comprehensive. “Whoever is found guilty in this case will face action. No one will be spared, nor will anyone be falsely implicated. Prima facie, I feel that everything will come into the public domain in the next two, four or five days,” he said.
Background: Who Was Nisha Bhagat
Bhagat was a tribal activist in Jharkhand who had been vocal against religious conversion and what she described as encroachment on tribal land and culture. She was reportedly not formally affiliated with the BJP or the RSS, a point she herself emphasised in her final livestream. Her activism had, according to BJP leaders, made her a target of sustained pressure. This comes amid a broader pattern of concerns over the safety of tribal rights activists in Jharkhand, a state where land, identity, and religion remain deeply contested political terrain.
What Happens Next
With the JMM promising disclosures within days and the BJP escalating its political offensive, the case is likely to remain at the centre of Jharkhand politics in the coming week. Demands for a thorough and independent investigation are mounting, and the names cited in Bhagat’s Facebook Live are expected to come under scrutiny.
