New Delhi, Oct 25 (NationPress) — India is laying the groundwork for an infrastructure that could potentially power the world’s digital intelligence. The collaboration between Adani Group and Google Cloud in constructing a colossal $15 billion AI data center campus, the largest outside the United States, signifies a pivotal moment, according to a recent report.
The Newsweek article highlights that when Prime Minister Narendra Modi proclaimed that India should “lead the world in the responsible use of artificial intelligence and build the infrastructure that powers it,” many perceived it as a far-off dream.
“Today, that vision is taking shape on the Bay of Bengal,” it stated.
Google has announced plans for an AI hub in Visakhapatnam, with an estimated investment of around $15 billion over five years (2026-2030) — marking its largest financial commitment in India to date. PM Modi noted that Google's extensive compute capacity infrastructure aligns with the vision of a Viksit Bharat.
This multifaceted investment, which encompasses gigawatt-scale data center infrastructure, “will be a powerful force in democratizing technology,” the Prime Minister remarked.
According to the Newsweek report, in 2021, Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani recognized that data centers would generate “infinite energy demand,” identifying clean energy as the main bottleneck.
“If India’s AI revolution is a skyscraper, we are building its foundation,” Gautam Adani stated.
In 2022, Adani Green Energy allocated over $70 billion to clean energy, aiming to create “energy-to-compute” corridors.
“The strategy was operationalized in 2023 with the formation of the AdaniConneX joint venture, targeting 1 GW of data-center capacity, along with the launch of Adani AI Labs,” the report outlined.
In 2024, the acquisition of Coredge established the foundation for a sovereign cloud.
By 2025, this effort resulted in the $15 billion Adani-Google AI Data-Centre Campus.
“Over four years, the Adani Group has committed $70 billion to renewable energy, including solar, wind, and energy storage. These assets now support what Adani refers to as ‘the infrastructure of intelligence,’” the report conveyed.
The Adani Group has crafted an “energy-to-compute” ecosystem, connecting green energy production, fiber connectivity, ports, data centers, and sovereign cloud networks.
“The Visakhapatnam project represents its most ambitious endeavor,” stated the report.
Conversely, India’s AI market is on the rise — projected to grow from $1 billion in 2024 to an estimated $8 billion by 2030, expanding at a rate exceeding 40 percent annually. India already generates over 8 exabytes of data daily, and this figure is rapidly increasing.
The Google AI hub in Visakhapatnam will feature a purpose-built data center campus, augmenting gigawatt-scale compute capacity to address the demand for digital services throughout India and globally. Developed alongside prominent partners like AdaniConneX and Airtel, it will be constructed with cutting-edge infrastructure that powers Google products like Search, Workspace, and YouTube.
