Key Takeaways
Ahmedabad, Feb 21 (NationPress) - Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ), via its subsidiary Adani Gangavaram Port Limited (AGPL), has entered into a significant memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the government-owned NMDC Limited and Vale Brazil, as announced here on Saturday.
The MoU, which was signed at the India–Brazil Business Forum Summit, lays out a strategic blueprint for developing an iron ore blending facility along with a dedicated Special Economic Zone (SEZ) at Gangavaram Port.
This agreement was formalized during the official visit of Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, with the presence of Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, highlighting the strengthening of the India–Brazil strategic partnership.
“This collaboration signifies a mutual dedication to constructing resilient, future-ready infrastructure that will enhance India’s role in global supply chains,” stated Ashwani Gupta, Whole-time Director and CEO of APSEZ.
By combining high-quality mineral logistics with state-of-the-art port capabilities, “we are addressing industry needs while fostering the nation’s overall economic development,” he further noted.
As part of this collaboration, the involved parties will co-develop, operationalize, and manage an integrated SEZ-based ecosystem focused on the blending, value addition, and commercialization of iron ore.
This initiative aims to fortify the iron ore export value chain along India’s east coast, improving efficiency, scale, and global competitiveness in mineral processing and trade.
With this advancement, the capacity of Gangavaram Port is projected to rise to 75 MMT, positioning it as a central hub for iron ore exports in India and the surrounding region.
“Our partnership with NMDC and Vale will establish a modern, efficient, and sustainable ecosystem for the iron ore industry on the East Coast. Gangavaram Port is set to become the first port in India capable of accommodating Valemax vessels—the world’s largest Very Large Ore Carriers (VLOCs),” Gupta expressed.
This collaboration will encompass the creation of an integrated iron ore blending and value addition ecosystem within a dedicated SEZ at Gangavaram Port; the establishment of fully mechanized berthing and cargo-handling facilities capable of supporting Valemax vessels with a capacity of up to 400,000 MMT; and comprehensive yard management, blending operations, and vessel discharge and loading to boost supply chain efficiency.
