How are India and Brazil Strengthening the Steel Supply Chain?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 21 (NationPress) On Saturday, India and Brazil entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at boosting collaboration in the mining and mineral sectors essential for the steel industry.
This alliance is expected to enhance the efficiency of steelmaking inputs, drive technology-driven advancements throughout the steel value chain, and fortify the resilience and sustainability of the steel supply chain between India and Brazil.
As per the Ministry of Steel, the agreement lays out a framework for bolstering bilateral cooperation across the steel value chain, with a keen focus on fostering reliable and sustainable development of critical raw materials necessary for steel production.
The collaboration will target attracting investments in exploration, mining, and infrastructure development within the steel sector; advancing processing and recycling technologies for minerals; automating and employing cutting-edge technologies in exploration and mining; leveraging artificial intelligence for geo-scientific data analysis to improve exploration activities; and implementing best practices for mineral extraction, processing, and environmental stewardship.
The MoU was signed by the Ministry of Steel and the Ministry of Mines and Energy of the Federative Republic of Brazil, in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, President of Brazil, at Hyderabad House.
As noted in an official statement, Brazil stands as one of the globe’s foremost producers of iron ore and harbors substantial reserves of minerals vital for steel production, including manganese, nickel, and niobium.
“Strengthened collaboration with Brazil is anticipated to enhance access to essential raw materials and technologies required for the sustained growth of India’s steel sector,” it mentioned.
India currently boasts a steelmaking capacity of 218 million tonnes.
To satisfy the increasing domestic demand driven by infrastructure development and industrialization, Indian firms are significantly expanding their steelmaking capabilities.
This partnership represents a crucial milestone in enhancing cooperation for the development of mineral resources necessary for steel production while facilitating access to advanced technologies in mineral processing, beneficiation, recycling, and data-driven exploration.
