Ahmedabad, July 5 (NationPress) In a remarkable advancement for green infrastructure, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) announced the launch of the world’s first steel slag road at any port, establishing a pioneering global standard in circular economy development.
This innovative road stretches over 1.1 kilometres within Hazira Port in Surat, linking the Multi-Purpose Berth (MPB-1) to the coal yard. While this is India's third steel slag road, it is notably the first ever built within a private port worldwide, positioning India and APSEZ as leaders in sustainable maritime infrastructure.
Utilizing processed steel slag aggregates—a by-product of steel production—this project exemplifies how industrial waste can be transformed into high-quality, durable infrastructure, as explained by company representatives.
The road was developed as part of Phase II of the Bulk and General Cargo Terminal (BGCT) expansion, in collaboration with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research–Central Road Research Institute (CSIR-CRRI) and the Union Ministry of Science and Technology.
Designed with a flexible pavement structure by CSIR-CRRI, this road enhances load-bearing capacity and durability while minimizing construction costs and environmental impact. This initiative aligns with the Waste to Wealth mission, reinforcing APSEZ's dedication to environmentally responsible port development.
The formal inauguration at Hazira Port was officiated by Vijay Kumar Saraswat, Member (Science and Technology) of NITI Aayog, alongside dignitaries including N. Kalaiselvi, Director-General of CSIR, and Manoranjan Parida, Director of CSIR-CRRI.
Also in attendance were Satish Pandey, Senior Principal Scientist and innovator of steel slag road technology, Anand Marathe, COO of Adani Hazira Port Ltd., and other esteemed guests and scientists, according to a company statement.
"With this initiative, APSEZ is at the forefront of transforming India’s logistics sector, integrating innovation, industrial ecology, and infrastructure resilience for national growth," the company emphasized.
