Key Takeaways

  • Adani Power secures a bid to supply 1,500 MW of thermal power.
  • Investment of $2 billion for a new ultra-supercritical power plant.
  • Projected job creation of 8,000-9,000 during construction.
  • Tariff set at Rs 5.383 per unit.
  • Power demand in UP expected to rise significantly by 2033-34.

Ahmedabad, May 10 (NationPress) Adani Power Ltd announced on Saturday that it has successfully secured a competitive bid to deliver 1,500 MW (net) of thermal power to Uttar Pradesh.

Under the terms of the agreement, India's foremost private sector thermal power producer will supply electricity at an attractive tariff of Rs 5.383 per unit from a new 2x800 MW (1500 MW net) ultra-supercritical power plant, which is to be established using the Design, Build, Finance, Own, and Operate (DBFOO) model in the region.

This announcement follows the recent approval of the project by the Uttar Pradesh cabinet earlier this month. The company is set to enter into a long-term Power Supply Agreement (PSA) with Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd. (UPPCL) based on the Letter of Award (LoA).

“We are pleased to have clinched the competitive bid to supply 1,500 MW of power to UP and feel honored to contribute significantly to the state's escalating power needs. We intend to establish a state-of-the-art, low-emission ultra-supercritical plant in UP and aim to commence the supply of reliable and high-quality electricity by FY30,” stated S.B. Khyalia, Chief Executive Officer of Adani Power.

Khyalia also mentioned that Adani Power plans to invest $2 billion in the construction of the plant and its associated infrastructure.

The initiative is projected to create direct and indirect employment opportunities for approximately 8,000-9,000 during the construction phase, and around 2,000 jobs once operational.

Forecasts indicate that thermal power demand in UP is expected to surge by 11,000 MW by 2033-34, fueled by factors such as industrialization, urbanization, and modernization. This 1,500 MW order is part of the government's strategy to accommodate that anticipated demand.

This marks the second significant PSA bid victory for the company within the past year, following the receipt of a composite 6,600 MW (1600 MW thermal and 5000 MW solar) LoI from Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) in September 2024, which has since been formalized into a PSA.

Point of View

The recent decision by Adani Power to supply 1,500 MW to Uttar Pradesh signifies a pivotal step in addressing the state's rapidly increasing energy needs. This project not only underscores the importance of private sector involvement in power generation but also showcases a commitment to sustainable energy practices. As the nation progresses toward modernization, such initiatives will be essential in ensuring reliable electricity supply for both industries and households.
