Should Aerial Emergency Facilities Be Established for the Bandra-Worli Sea Link and Coastal Road?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Feb 6 (NationPress) The Guardian Minister of Mumbai Suburban District, Ashish Shelar, emphasized the necessity for a comprehensive and forward-looking emergency management system for the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, Versova-Bandra Sea Link, and the Coastal Road. He highlighted the critical requirement for aerial evacuation capabilities.
In light of the recent gas tanker mishap on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway, which left passengers stranded for over 36 hours, Shelar pointed out glaring deficiencies in the existing emergency response protocols.
In a communication directed to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the minister noted that responding promptly and effectively to accidents, fires, or natural calamities on these vital routes could prove to be extremely challenging.
Shelar mentioned that due to the Coastal Road's inclusion of underground tunnels and stretches over the sea, rapidly evacuating the injured, ensuring quick deployment of security personnel, and providing timely access for emergency services could become significantly complicated.
Against this backdrop, Shelar urged for the immediate construction of a helipad at Bandra Reclamation, situated near the Sea Link. He pointed out that sufficient space is available at the site and called upon the Chief Minister to make a swift decision and issue necessary directives to the relevant agencies.
“The establishment of a helipad would allow for the prompt evacuation of the injured via air ambulances during emergencies on the Coastal Road and Sea Link. It would also ensure quick access to Lilavati Hospital and other major medical facilities in the area.
“This initiative would greatly enhance collaboration among disaster management entities, police, fire services, NDRF, and other departments, thereby fortifying the long-term emergency preparedness strategy for Mumbai, the nation's densely populated financial hub,” Shelar concluded in his representation.
