Afghanistan Enhances Regional Diplomacy Amid Conflict with Pakistan and West Asia Turmoil
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 30 (NationPress) In light of Pakistan's alleged involvement in attempting to mediate a ceasefire between the United States and Iran during an ongoing conflict in West Asia, Afghanistan appears to be amplifying its diplomatic efforts amid its own military struggles with Islamabad.
During discussions about bilateral ties with Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, Iran's ambassador in Kabul, Alireza Bikdeli, conveyed his country’s perspective on the recent events, labeling it a "war sparked by the United States and Israel," as reported by Tolo News on Monday.
Muttaqi characterized the situation as an "act of aggression" by Washington and Tel Aviv against Iran, cautioning that any escalation of the conflict could have detrimental effects on the region, the Afghan Foreign Ministry stated.
The Afghan Foreign Minister further "acknowledged Iran's supportive position regarding the recent disputes between Afghanistan and Pakistan" and noted that Kabul aims to address "reasonable demands from both parties through genuine dialogue," according to the report.
The interim head of Iran’s embassy in Kabul described the collaborative efforts between Afghanistan and Iran, particularly regarding trade, as favorable. He mentioned that Iran’s leadership is attentively observing the developments between Afghanistan and Pakistan and advocates for a peaceful resolution, as stated in the article.
This meeting was focused on enhancing bilateral relations and regional matters, where Muttaqi remarked on the increasing trade connections between Afghanistan and Iran.
In a separate update from late Sunday, the news site also highlighted Muttaqi's conversation with Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Interestingly, the UAE is also involved as a negotiator between Washington and Tehran. They discussed bilateral relations, the situation between Afghanistan and the United States, regional dynamics, and "recent tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan."
As per an official statement cited in the report, during their discussion, Muttaqi emphasized that Afghanistan, as a neighboring nation, is committed to resolving issues with Pakistan through dialogue and mutual understanding, ensuring that Afghan territory is not used against Pakistan.
The UAE foreign minister also indicated that ongoing tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan are unbeneficial for either side and voiced his country’s support for initiatives aimed at reducing tensions and fostering stability in the region.
Muttaqi expressed gratitude for the UAE's role in mediating the release of an American detainee and reiterated that disputes should be settled through dialogue.
Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan underscored the significance of Afghanistan's relations with the US and pledged that his country would contribute positively in this context.
"This development comes at a time when rising regional tensions underscore the critical importance of mediating countries like the United Arab Emirates, with hopes that diplomatic initiatives can facilitate a reduction in the crisis and promote stability in Afghanistan and the surrounding region," the report added.
The war-torn nation of Afghanistan shares its western border with Iran and its southern and southeastern borders with Pakistan. While the Pakistan border has been closed for nearly five months due to the conflict with the neighboring country, the US-Israel airstrikes on Iran have further aggravated the situation on the opposite side.
As a landlocked nation grappling with sanctions against the Taliban government, Afghanistan's access to global aid and essential supplies remains under significant strain, with the nearest seaports located in its two immediate neighboring countries.
