Key Takeaways
Kabul, Feb 23 (NationPress) The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) announced on Monday that Afghanistan is set to welcome Sri Lanka for a white-ball series in the United Arab Emirates next month. This will mark only the second bilateral T20I series between the two nations, following their inaugural matchup in February 2024.
In One Day Internationals (ODIs), the teams have already played against each other in bilateral series during 2022, 2023, and 2024. The three T20I matches are scheduled to take place at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on March 13, 15, and 17, while the ODI matches will occur at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on March 20, 22, and 25.
"We are thrilled to host Sri Lanka for the first time ever. This event showcases the strength of our partnership with the Sri Lanka Cricket Board, and we are dedicated to enhancing our relationship to deliver an exceptional cricket experience in the future. Sri Lanka has been performing remarkably well lately, and we eagerly anticipate a competitive white-ball series between two top-notch teams," stated an ACB representative.
"Furthermore, this series is vital to our objectives as we aim to develop our team and address crucial areas needing enhancement. Our main focus is to prepare the squad for significant ICC and ACC events, as well as various bilateral engagements scheduled over the next two years," remarked Naseeb Khan, CEO of ACB.
The series takes place between two significant events on the global cricket calendar. The Men's T20 World Cup concludes on March 8, just five days prior to the first T20I match. Afghanistan exited the competition early, whereas Sri Lanka is competing in the Super Eights stage.
"Bilateral cricket is essential in the international scene, and we are incredibly excited to be part of this historic tour, marking the first time Sri Lanka will participate in a bilateral series hosted by Afghanistan. I am confident that this tour will aid us in strategizing and getting ready for our upcoming international duties," stated Ashley de Silva, CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket.
The ODI series will conclude a day before the commencement of both the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Pakistan Super League (PSL) on March 26. Numerous players from both teams are anticipated to participate in the two franchise tournaments. Among the Afghan players, Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad have IPL and PSL commitments, while Sri Lanka's Dasun Shanaka and Kusal Perera are also included in various teams.
