Agartala, May 10 (NationPress) Due to rising tensions between India and Pakistan, the Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) airport authority in Agartala has significantly enhanced security protocols following instructions from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), as confirmed by a senior official from the Airport Authority of India (AAI) on Friday.

The MBB airport, located just 18 km from the city of Agartala, is strategically positioned near the India-Bangladesh border.

Airport Director Kailash Chander Meena announced that additional security measures are now in place at the MBB Airport, classified as a hyper-sensitive location due to its closeness to the Bangladesh border.

The AAI has advised all passengers to arrive at the airport at least three hours prior to their flight, owing to the increased screening and security processes. “This new measure aims to facilitate smooth check-in, baggage screening, and boarding under the current nationwide security alert,” Meena stated.

While specific security arrangements were not disclosed, the Airport Director reassured that the airport remains secure and fully operational.

“All essential measures are being implemented in response to the current situation. We are adhering to all threat assessment protocols and maintaining strong security deployments,” he added.

The official noted that an average of 34 flights operate daily from the MBB Airport, and flight schedules continue unaffected despite the elevated alert status.

This bolstered security reflects broader national readiness amid cross-border tensions, as security agencies throughout India maintain heightened vigilance.

In terms of passenger numbers and flight operations, the MBB Airport is the second busiest in the northeastern region, following the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport in Guwahati.

The new integrated terminal of the MBB Airport, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a cost of Rs 438 crore on January 4, 2022, features a built-up area of 30,000 sq mt and is designed to accommodate both domestic and international passengers concurrently during peak hours.

Currently, the Tripura government is advocating for the MBB Airport to be designated as an international airport, with proposed flights between Agartala and Bangladesh.

The LGBI Airport in Guwahati and the Bir Tikendrajit International Airport in Imphal already hold international status in the northeast.

Previously known as Singerbill Airport, the MBB Airport was renamed in July 2018 after Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur by the Union government.

Built in 1942 on land donated by then Tripura king Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur, the airport served as a technical base for the Royal Air Force during World War II.
