Will the AICC Accept Bhupen Borah's Resignation?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Feb 16 (NationPress) The All India Congress Committee (AICC) has declined to accept the resignation of former Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) chief Bhupen Borah, as senior party figures intervened to mitigate internal discord ahead of the Assam Assembly elections.
Borah had presented his resignation letter to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, but the party leadership has temporarily set it aside while engaging in reconciliation efforts.
The seasoned Congress politician indicated he would reveal his final decision by Tuesday morning after discussions with his family.
“I have dedicated the last 32 years to Congress. I resigned because my opinions were not valued,” Borah shared with reporters, revealing the emotional turmoil surrounding his decision.
Despite pleas from party officials to reconsider, Borah insisted he required more time to come to a conclusion.
“I still need to talk with my family about this,” he noted.
In an effort to mend fences, Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi extended an apology to Borah during a press briefing at his residence.
Labeling Borah a “true Congressman,” Gogoi stated, “If anything has distressed Bhupen Borah within the party, I, as a younger brother, offer my apologies.”
Assam Congress in-charge Bhanwar Jitendra Singh stated that conversations with Borah and the central leadership had clarified misunderstandings.
He confirmed that Borah’s resignation had not been acknowledged and emphasized that the senior leader is a crucial member of the Congress.
Singh highlighted that senior leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, were deeply involved in discussions aimed at resolving the situation, highlighting the party’s commitment to unity in Assam.
AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal also allegedly discussed the matter with Borah, urging him to retract his resignation.
Meanwhile, Raijor Dal chief and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi remarked that Borah seemed discontented within the Congress.
Even as Singh expressed gratitude to Borah for “withdrawing” his resignation, the former APCC president clarified that no definitive decision had yet been made.
“By tomorrow morning, I will relay my decision through Bhanwar Jitendra Singh,” Borah confirmed.
