Why Are Airfares Soaring Across India Due to IndiGo’s Disruptions?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Dec 5 (NationPress) Ticket prices on numerous key routes have surged dramatically as of Friday, following the complete cancellation of all IndiGo's domestic flights from Delhi Airport until midnight. The abrupt suspension has resulted in a severe shortage of available seats, causing a significant spike in last-minute fare increases nationwide.
The cancellation was confirmed on the official X handle of Delhi Airport, stating that all IndiGo domestic flights set to leave on December 5 would remain grounded until 11:59 p.m.
Meanwhile, operations for other airlines are proceeding as normal, and the airport has advised travelers to verify their flight status before arriving at the terminal.
The market's response was immediate. A one-stop flight from Delhi to Bengaluru with Air India for Friday night skyrocketed to Rs 1.02 lakh, while Akasa Air priced it at approximately Rs 39,000.
Fares from Delhi to Mumbai on Air India reached a peak of Rs 60,000. Tickets on the Chennai-Delhi route for Air India Express climbed to Rs 41,000, and SpiceJet charged up to Rs 69,000.
Routes from Hyderabad also faced drastic fare increases. A one-stop Air India flight from Hyderabad to Delhi surged to Rs 87,000.
Fares from Hyderabad to Mumbai surged to Rs 76,500, and tickets from Hyderabad to Bengaluru with Air India increased to Rs 41,400, while Air India Express listed the same route at Rs 36,100.
The disruption was not limited to Delhi, as over 220 IndiGo flights were cancelled in the capital, with more than 100 cancellations in Bengaluru and nearly 90 in Hyderabad.
This has resulted in lengthy queues at airports, prolonged delays, and thousands of passengers left stranded.
IndiGo has been grappling with extensive cancellations for several days now. The airline indicated that these disruptions are linked to the implementation of new Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) regulations for pilots, resulting in crew shortages and scheduling issues.
While these regulations aim to minimize fatigue and enhance safety, IndiGo acknowledged that it miscalculated the crew requirements under the updated system.
In November, IndiGo had already reported over 1,200 cancellations across its network.
On Thursday alone, more than 500 flights were cancelled nationwide, marking one of the airline's most significant operational disruptions in recent memory.
