How is the Govt Ensuring Fair Airfares Amid IndiGo's Crisis?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Dec 6 (NationPress) The Ministry of Civil Aviation announced on Saturday that it has activated its regulatory authority to guarantee fair and reasonable fares on all impacted routes in light of IndiGo's ongoing operational difficulties.
An official order has been sent to all airlines, requiring them to strictly comply with the newly set fare ceilings, which will remain in effect until the situation is entirely resolved.
"The Ministry will maintain vigilant oversight of fare levels through real-time data and active collaboration with airlines and online travel services. Any violation of the established norms will prompt immediate corrective measures in the greater public interest," the statement indicated.
This move by the ministry was prompted by the exorbitant airfares on several key routes, following IndiGo's cancellation of numerous domestic flights.
The abrupt cancellations led to a significant shortage of seats, causing a dramatic increase in last-minute ticket prices nationwide.
For instance, Delhi-Mumbai ticket prices on Air India soared to Rs 60,000 on Friday. On the Chennai-Delhi route, Air India Express tickets reached Rs 41,000, while SpiceJet's prices hit as high as Rs 69,000.
The ministry has expressed serious concern over the unreasonably high airfares being imposed by certain airlines during this ongoing crisis.
"To safeguard passengers from any form of opportunistic pricing, the Ministry has enacted its regulatory powers to ensure fair and reasonable fares on all impacted routes," it added.
The directive aims to uphold pricing discipline in the market, prevent any exploitation of distressed passengers, and ensure that citizens requiring urgent travel—including senior citizens, students, and patients—are not subjected to financial strain during this challenging time, according to government statements.
On Saturday, IndiGo canceled over 400 domestic flights as the airline's crisis extended into its fifth day. Meanwhile, Indian Railways has stepped up to assist the distressed passengers by adding extra coaches to its trains to accommodate the surge in demand.
