Why Did the 'Miya Muslim' Row Cause AIUDF to Walk Out of Assam Assembly?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, February 17 (NationPress) Members of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) walked out of the Assam Assembly on the second day of the Budget Session after their request for an adjournment motion concerning the purported harassment of Miya Muslims was disregarded.
Following this, the party organized a protest outside the Assembly. AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam criticized Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for allegedly targeting the minority group with what he described as inflammatory and divisive comments.
“Today, on behalf of the AIUDF, we submitted an adjournment motion because the Chief Minister is inciting discord regarding Miya Muslims. He suggested that they should receive only Rs 4 or Rs 5 for rickshaw fares. Such remarks are utterly unacceptable,” Islam claimed.
He further accused the BJP-led administration of intentionally fostering division and hostility among communities in Assam.
“The Chief Minister consistently disrupts the minority community. This government is solely focused on their harassment. Occasionally, BJP officials discuss shootings and chant slogans like ‘No Mercy’, clearly aimed at a specific minority group. This is purely polarisation politics,” Islam stated.
The AIUDF leader noted that the adjournment motion was filed under Rule 56 of the Assam Assembly Rules, which permits discourse on matters of urgent public significance, especially those involving remarks made by an individual in a constitutional position.
“According to Rule 56, a discussion is warranted. How can the Chief Minister, being in a constitutional role, make such comments and single out a community under the guise of Bangladeshi Miya Muslims? We were denied the chance to deliberate on this crucial issue within the Assembly,” he remarked.
Islam added that the refusal to allow discussion compelled the party to boycott the session and walk out in protest.
The AIUDF leaders reiterated their demand for the issue to be addressed in the Assembly, urging the Speaker to uphold discipline and impartiality in the House. The ruling BJP has not yet responded to the allegations put forth by the AIUDF.
