Dubai, Sep 25 (NationPress) Chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained the reasoning behind Sai Sudharsan’s inclusion in India’s Test squad for the upcoming two-match series against the West Indies. He emphasized that the young player has exhibited substantial promise and the selectors aim to grant him an extended opportunity on the field. Additionally, Agarkar addressed the absence of Karun Nair from the squad and the team’s overall expectations from its players.
During a press conference on Thursday, Agarkar unveiled India’s 15-member squad for the home Tests against the Windies. Sudharsan, who participated in the playing XI during the team's tour of England earlier this year, has received the selectors' backing and has been included in the squad.
Agarkar commended Sudharsan, noting that the younger players in the team have been making significant strides, leading selectors to believe that supporting them will help shape their careers.
“Sai has shown a lot of promise, he’s a very good player. Hopefully, we can provide him with a longer run at a specific position. When players like Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma retire, they leave considerable gaps, especially with Ashwin having retired recently and Shami being away for some time now.
“These players have been pivotal for the team over the last decade. Many young players have shown great potential during the challenging tour of England; despite not winning, we identified several positives to build upon. Moving forward, we hope to give these players the time they need to develop their careers,” Agarkar told reporters.
When questioned about Nair’s exclusion and Devdutt Padikkal’s return, Agarkar stated that the expectations from Nair during the England series were not met.
“To be honest, we anticipated more from Karun in England. Despite having played four Tests, we’ve only discussed one innings. It is what it is. We believe Padikkal offers more potential at this moment, and while I wish we could grant everyone 15 or 20 Tests, that's not feasible. Padikkal has been part of the Test setup, performed in Australia, and had a good showing against England, scoring 50 in Dharamsala. He demonstrated promising form with India A,” he added.
The two-match Test series between India and the West Indies is set to commence on October 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
