Will the AISF's Deadline Push the Left Front for Seat-Sharing Clarity?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 12 (NationPress) The All India Secular Front (AISF) has issued a timeline for the CPI(M)-led Left Front in West Bengal to clarify its seat-sharing strategies for the upcoming Assembly elections. This demand comes in light of the Congress party's choice to contest independently.
AISF insiders revealed that a communication has already been dispatched to the Left Front, particularly directed at its leader, CPI(M), requesting the seat-sharing proposal by Sunday. Should they fail to comply, the AISF will commence announcing its candidates in phases for various Assembly constituencies of their choosing.
In the previous 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, the Left Front, Congress, and AISF had come together under the coalition named 'Sanjukta Morcha' (United Front). However, AISF distanced itself from this coalition during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, while Congress and the Left Front maintained their seat-sharing agreements.
"This time, with Congress absent from the arrangement, the Left Front is expected to finalize the seat-sharing proposals with us promptly, as our request for seats will be significantly lower than what Congress would have sought had they remained part of the Sanjukta Morcha. Nonetheless, it seems that differing opinions among the various allies within the Left Front are causing delays in finalizing the seat-sharing formula. We cannot afford to wait indefinitely," stated an AISF source who wished to remain anonymous.
Indeed, discrepancies among the Left Front's allies regarding the seat-sharing formula were acknowledged by a member of the CPI(M) central committee.
He noted that with Congress out of the picture, other Left Front allies such as CPI, All India Forward Bloc, and Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) are also seeking additional seats.
"However, we are optimistic that a mutually agreeable seat-sharing arrangement will ultimately be reached, both within the Left Front and with AISF," the CPI(M) central committee member expressed.
