Why Were Dilip Ghosh, Sukanta Majumdar, and Suvendu Adhikari Excluded from the New Bengal State Committee?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 7 (NationPress) – On Wednesday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) revealed a new 35-member state committee for West Bengal. The party's leadership provided insights into the exclusion of former state presidents Dilip Ghosh and Sukanta Majumdar, along with the current Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, from this newly formed committee.
A member of the new state committee, who was part of the previous committee, clarified that the BJP’s party constitution dictates that no former state president can be included in any new state committee.
Additionally, the constitution prohibits any individual holding a governmental role, whether as a Cabinet Minister or as a Minister of State, from simultaneously serving in a state committee.
“In the cases of Ghosh and Majumdar, both being former state presidents, and with Majumdar also serving as a Union Minister of State, their exclusion aligns with the party's constitutional rules,” the committee member explained.
Regarding Adhikari's absence, the rationale is more practical. “As the present Leader of the Opposition, he carries numerous responsibilities, particularly as the main representative for the party’s campaign in the upcoming Assembly elections in West Bengal next year. The central leadership prefers he focuses on these duties rather than taking on additional organizational roles,” the state committee member elaborated.
The party's “one-person, one-post” policy led to the decision of not including any serving legislators in the new state committee. Consequently, five current legislators – Gopal Chandra Saha, Gauri Shankar Ghosh, Ashok Dinda, Laxman Ghorui, and Biman Ghosh – have been left out.
However, some current legislators, including the Chief Whip of the BJP’s legislative party in the West Bengal Assembly, Shankar Ghosh, fashion designer-turned-politician and party legislator Agnimitra Paul, and Dipak Burman, have been granted exceptions.
This new state committee announcement coincides with the visit of the BJP’s national president and Union Minister of Health, J.P. Nadda, to Kolkata. Nadda is set to lead an important meeting with the newly formed state committee on Thursday afternoon, where he plans to outline the party’s strategy for the upcoming Assembly elections in West Bengal later this year.
