Kolkata, July 1 (NationPress) The BJP is set to announce its new state president for West Bengal on Thursday, following elections for the position, if necessary, on that very day, as indicated by a notification from party legislator Dipak Burman on Tuesday afternoon.
However, insiders from the BJP's Bengal faction suggest that the selection of the new state party president is likely to be a unanimous decision, with voting being improbable unless a last-minute nomination arises.
"The nomination process will be open to all, as per party rules. Yet, at this stage, an election seems unlikely, and a consensus is expected," stated a BJP state committee member who chose to remain anonymous.
The process of submitting, reviewing, withdrawing nominations, and publishing the final candidate list will conclude on Wednesday. Following this, any potential elections will occur on Thursday, with results announced on the same day.
If only one candidate is in contention, it will be apparent on Wednesday who the new state BJP president will be.
Discussions among party leaders have narrowed the list to just a few names, including a current member of the Rajya Sabha.
The current Bengal BJP chief, Sukanta Majumdar, a two-time Lok Sabha member from Balurghat, has necessitated a new state president due to his appointment as Minister of State in the Union ministry, adhering to the party's policy of "one person, one post".
Sukanta Majumdar took over as West Bengal BJP chief from former Lok Sabha member Dilip Ghosh after the 2021 state assembly elections, concluding Ghosh's two consecutive terms in the role.
