Carlos Alcaraz Reflects on Indian Wells Loss: A Shift in Strategy Needed
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Indian Wells, March 15 (NationPress) World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz confessed that the constant pressure of being a target has begun to weigh on him after experiencing his first defeat of the season against Daniil Medvedev during the semi-finals of the Indian Wells Masters on Saturday.
Medvedev showcased an impressive performance, winning 6-3, 7-6(3), thus ending Alcaraz's remarkable 16-match winning run that included claiming the Australian Open title, where he made history as the youngest player to achieve a career Grand Slam.
In his reflections on the match, Alcaraz acknowledged that the burden of being the player everyone aspires to defeat occasionally gets to him.
“What I'm just getting tired a little bit is to get that target on my back all the time,” he stated.
Alcaraz also commended Medvedev's performance, expressing surprise at the Russian's aggressive and nearly flawless game.
“I have never seen Daniil playing like this. I knew he would be aggressive from the start, but the way he executed it truly took me by surprise. He hardly made any mistakes,” he remarked.
Despite attempting to adapt his strategy during the match, Alcaraz felt that Medvedev had an answer for all his shots.
“I realized that I had to do something different… and he was finding every solution and every answer to my shots,” he explained.
Despite this setback, the 22-year-old maintained a positive outlook on his performance, asserting that his competitors must bring their best game to beat him.
“I have been playing great tennis, and I just show the players and show the people that if they want to beat me, they have to play at their best level for one hour and a half, two hours in every match,” he affirmed.
Alcaraz also expressed his preference for viewing this loss as a source of motivation rather than a disappointment.
“I have to see the good things about this loss. It is about the people and the players thinking that they need to play at this level if they want to beat me,” he said.
Looking forward, the Spaniard mentioned that he is not focused on starting another winning streak but rather on achieving his personal goals for each tournament.
“I'm not thinking about needing to win or having to win. It's just about pursuing my goals, chasing what I set out before every tournament. That’s my mindset.”
