Could AMMK Gain Power If NDA Triumphs in TN Assembly Polls?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Jan 27 (NationPress) The founder of the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK), T.T.V. Dhinakaran, stated on Tuesday that the shifting political dynamics in Tamil Nadu may lead to a coalition government following the 2026 Assembly elections. This could potentially allow his party to hold a Cabinet position should the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) come to power.
While speaking to the press in Madurai, Dhinakaran noted that many political analysts predict that no single party may achieve a clear mandate in the upcoming elections.
“Considering the current political atmosphere, a coalition government seems plausible. In that context, there's a viable chance for AMMK leaders to hold positions in the Cabinet led by the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK),” he remarked.
Dhinakaran emphasized that the notion of sharing power is not being framed as a prerequisite for alliances but rather as a hope. He explained that any requests for Cabinet roles stem from the necessity to acknowledge and reward AMMK members who previously gave up key roles in the AIADMK government due to political fragmentation.
He reiterated that the AMMK would refrain from adopting an aggressive stance. “We will not engage in pressure tactics. Discussions will be approached with care and friendliness. We understand alliance dynamics, and the AIADMK is also aware that our demands will be reasonable and focused on capable individuals,” he stated.
When asked about former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam, Dhinakaran mentioned that he had extended an invitation for him to join the NDA. However, he recognized that Panneerselvam's ongoing legal issues with the AIADMK leadership place him in a difficult position.
“Ultimately, it is his choice. Personally, I hope he joins us so we can collaborate towards bringing back Jayalalithaa’s governance in Tamil Nadu,” he added.
Dhinakaran also expressed his disappointment regarding several AIADMK leaders, including former MLA R. Vaithilingam, shifting allegiance to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).
In response to the defection of AMMK deputy general secretary S.V.S.P. Manickaraja to the DMK, he noted that local political pressures were influential.
According to him, Manickaraja was eager to contest from the Kovilpatti Assembly constituency but felt limited after AMMK allied with the NDA, leading to his departure.
Despite these challenges, Dhinakaran asserted that the AMMK remains dedicated to its coalition strategy and is optimistic about obtaining a significant role in Tamil Nadu’s political arena as the 2026 elections approach.
