Did the Fire Erupt from the Anandapur Momo Factory? Fire Department Clarifies; Death Toll Hits 23
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 29 (NationPress) The devastating fire at the Anandapur warehouse, located on the southern outskirts of Kolkata, has tragically claimed the lives of 23 individuals as of Thursday, with over 25 people still unaccounted for, sources reported. The fire department, alongside forensic experts, has released a preliminary report concerning the incident. This report clarifies that the blaze did not start in the Wow Momo factory, but rather originated from the nearby Pushpanjali decorator's warehouse.
Gangadhar Das, the owner of the Pushpanjali warehouse, was apprehended in connection with the incident and had previously asserted that the fire spread from the momo factory. However, findings from the forensic and fire department investigations contradict this claim.
Around 3 am on Monday, residents of Anandapur reported seeing flames rising high as they consumed both the momo factory and the adjacent Pushpanjali warehouse.
A total of twelve fire engines worked diligently for nearly two days to fully extinguish the fire at both locations. In response, the fire department lodged a complaint with local authorities, initiating a comprehensive investigation.
In addition to the fire department's efforts, forensic specialists began probing the origin and cause of the fire. They collected numerous samples from the site, and four days post-incident, a preliminary joint investigation report was filed with the police.
According to sources, the report indicates that the fire ignited on the third floor of the decorator's warehouse before spreading to the adjacent momo factory.
Moreover, the report details that the combined area of the momo factory and warehouse was approximately 35,000 square feet, with the momo factory covering 8,000 square feet.
Gangadhar utilized the remaining space for his decorative business. Although the preliminary report has been submitted, forensic experts may be summoned again if deemed necessary.
Efforts are currently underway to clear the rubble of the two factories that were destroyed by the flames. Large sections of collapsed metal structures are being dismantled using gas cutters and cranes, while the search for human remains continues amidst the debris.
As per reports, the death toll rose to 23 by Thursday afternoon, while more than 25 individuals remain missing, with search operations ongoing.
