Did Response Delays Contribute to the Kolkata Fire Tragedy?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 29 (NationPress) – With the tragic fire at two warehouses in Anandapur claiming 21 lives, the initial eyewitness, Virendra Yadav, who was the first to alert the fire department, stated that the disaster was preventable had the state fire services acted swiftly rather than getting caught up in jurisdictional protocols.
Yadav, who operates a cattle shed adjoining the Pushpanjali Decorators warehouse, where the fire originated before engulfing the nearby Wow Momo facility, recounted his experience.
He was the first person to notify the fire department when he discovered the flames. Unfortunately, his call to 101 was routed to the district control room. Instead of sending immediate assistance, the officials instructed him to reach out to the Kolkata control room.
Afterwards, he had to ask a friend to contact the Kolkata fire services control room. Fire trucks arrived about thirty minutes later.
Initially, Yadav attempted to extinguish the flames with his own pump. When his efforts failed, he prioritized the safety of his cows and buffaloes and escaped. He shared his account with reporters on Thursday.
Yadav expressed, “At around 2:30 a.m. on Monday, I noticed the fire. From my kitchen window, I observed the flames. With a cattle shed nearby, I was anxious about my cows and buffaloes. Driven by fear, I attempted to put out the fire using water from a motor pump, but I was unsuccessful. I was trying to save my livestock.”
He further added, “I called the fire service, and they told me to reach the Kolkata control room. This confusion regarding jurisdiction caused a significant delay in response that could have been avoided.”
Local residents voiced their frustration over State Fire Minister Sujit Bose arriving at the scene 32 hours post-incident.
“Why did it take so long for the minister to show up?” questioned a local. “This reflects a major failure in the administration’s handling of the fire.”
The inferno has resulted in 21 confirmed fatalities, with approximately 28 individuals still unaccounted for as search operations proceed.
The police have apprehended Gangadhar Das, the owner of the devastated Pushpanjali Decorators warehouse, on charges of causing death through negligence. He was presented before a court on Thursday and remanded into police custody until February 4.
The Pushpanjali warehouse was located next to the Wow Momo establishment, which also suffered extensive damage in the fire. Similar charges have been filed against the owners of the Momo company, but no arrests have been executed thus far.
Wow Momo announced on Wednesday that three of its employees lost their lives in this tragic incident.
