Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 27 (NationPress) The government of West Bengal has declared a financial aid of Rs 10 lakh for each family affected by the tragic warehouse fire in Anandapur, which claimed lives and left several individuals missing.
The announcement was made by State Urban Development Minister and Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim during his visit to the scene of the fire on Tuesday afternoon.
Hakim mentioned that the compensation checks would be distributed once the remains or body parts are identified. He also noted that the police would seek the Calcutta High Court's permission on Wednesday to conduct DNA testing, as per legal protocols.
“Samples can only be examined after receiving court approval,” Hakim stated.
The fire erupted around 3 am on Monday in two neighboring warehouses in Anandapur—one owned by a decorator and the other by a ‘momo company’. Police reports indicate that eight fatalities have occurred thus far, with numerous others still unaccounted for.
The search for the missing individuals continues, as families scour hospitals, police stations, and the fire site for updates.
According to police information, the decorator's warehouse belonged to Gangadhar Das. On Sunday evening, many workers from various regions were present at the site, engaged in flower decoration work, with many asleep when the fire ignited.
The precise cause of the fire remains unclear, and concerns persist regarding the existence of fire safety measures.
Authorities have registered two cases related to the incident and an investigation is underway. Gangadhar Das has been summoned for questioning, although it remains unconfirmed whether he has been detained or arrested.
Even after 36 hours, pockets of flames were still evident at the site. There are worries regarding the legality of the warehouse structures, with claims that they were constructed on filled wetlands.
In response to these allegations, Hakim remarked, “It is unjust to jeopardize someone’s livelihood. I cannot confirm if it was a wetland or not.”
He also asserted that no wetlands are currently being filled, attributing any such actions to the previous Left Front government, which concluded in 2011.
Hakim assured that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had dispatched him to support the affected families. “The fire was extremely severe. The police are conducting an investigation into the incident,” he stated.
