Kolkata Warehouse Fire: Death Toll Reaches 27, Are There More Victims?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 1 (NationPress) The tragic fire incident at the Anandapur warehouses on the southern outskirts of Kolkata has resulted in a grim death toll of 27, with 25 individuals still missing, as reported by officials on Sunday.
On Saturday, police sources confirmed the recovery of two additional bodies from the devastated warehouses, raising the total fatalities to 27.
The establishment of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) just a week after the fire has sparked criticism regarding the delayed response from the authorities.
The fire erupted at the Pushpanjali decorator’s warehouse and the Wow Momo factory in the early hours of January 26.
Despite a relentless 32-hour battle involving twelve fire engines, emergency services struggled to control the blaze. Unfortunately, several workers were trapped within the warehouses, leading to their tragic deaths.
Following this catastrophic event, the Baruipur district police have formed an SIT, consisting of five members led by SP Shubhendu Kumar. This team includes the Additional Superintendent of Police, DSP Crime, DEB Inspector, and another police officer of inspector rank.
It’s important to note that the renowned Momo manufacturing company has come under scrutiny since the incident, resulting in multiple arrests. Allegations suggest that the factory was constructed on reclaimed wetland.
According to police sources, the SIT will thoroughly investigate all aspects, including analyzing forensic reports, conducting DNA tests on the deceased, and pinpointing any irregularities at the factory.
Notably, the police have arrested two additional suspects connected to this tragedy. The Narendraput police apprehended both the manager and deputy manager of the momo manufacturing company. Previously, Gangadhar Das, the owner of the Pushpanjali decorator's warehouse, was also taken into custody. This incident has ignited a contentious debate between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP, with the latter accusing the Mamata Banerjee government of shielding those truly responsible for this disaster.
