Kolkata Fire Tragedy: Have 'Wow Momo' Warehouse Officials Been Arrested?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 30 (NationPress) The Kolkata Police announced on Friday that the investigation team looking into the tragic fire at the factory-cum-warehouse has apprehended the manager and deputy manager of Wow Momo.
The arrests occurred late Thursday night, with the individuals identified as Momoronjon Sit and Raja Chakraborty. Sit serves as the manager of the facility, while Chakraborty holds the position of deputy manager.
Currently, both are detained at the local Narendrapur Police Station and are undergoing questioning by the investigating officers. They are set to be presented in a lower court later today, where the public prosecutor will request their police custody for continued interrogation, as confirmed by an official from the South 24 Parganas district police.
“The police are probing their whereabouts during the fire that broke out at midnight on January 25. We are also examining whether there was any negligence on their part that contributed to the horrific fire, which claimed numerous lives,” stated a district police official.
With the arrests of Chakraborty and Sit, the total number of individuals arrested in this case has now reached three. Previously, the owner of the adjacent warehouse, Gangadhar Das of Pushpanjali Decorators, was also taken into custody.
On Thursday, the state fire services department, along with a forensic team, submitted their initial report on the incident, indicating that the fire did not originate from the Wow Momo facility but rather from the nearby Pushpanjali Decorators warehouse.
However, Das strongly refuted these claims, asserting that the fire initially spread from the Momo factory.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused the state administration of negligence in handling the situation. On Friday afternoon, Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, plans to conduct a protest rally in the Anandapur area. While the police initially denied permission for the rally, he later received approval from the Calcutta High Court, which imposed certain conditions.
