Andhra Pradesh leads green energy push with 160 GW plan: CM Naidu
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday, 1 July declared that Andhra Pradesh is ahead of other Indian states in green energy production, citing a state plan to generate 160 gigawatts of power from renewable sources — with agreements already signed for 100 gigawatts. The remarks came at Satyavedu in Tirupati district, where Naidu laid the foundation stone for Hero MotoCorp's 'Global Parts Centre 2.0' facility at Madannapalem.
Green Energy Targets and Signed Agreements
Naidu stated that the state government has formulated plans to reach a 160 GW green energy generation capacity and has already formalised agreements covering 100 GW of that target. He positioned Andhra Pradesh as a frontrunner among Indian states in the renewable energy space, pointing to the scale and pace of commitments secured so far.
This comes amid a broader national push to expand India's renewable energy base, with several states competing to attract clean energy investments. Andhra Pradesh's coastal geography and wind corridors have historically made it an attractive destination for such projects.
Industrial Growth and 'Speed of Doing Business'
The Chief Minister said the government is implementing 'Speed of Doing Business' protocols and is taking what he described as 'revolutionary decisions' to foster industrial growth across the state. He highlighted that Andhra Pradesh has road, rail, port, and air connectivity in place to serve industrial requirements.
'To cater to industrial needs, we have road infrastructure, rail, port, and air connectivity. We have initiated measures to supply water for industries alongside agriculture. We are making farmers partners in the state's ongoing development,' Naidu said.
He added that the government is going beyond merely signing agreements and is actively enabling industries to commence production.
Hero MotoCorp Expansion and ₹3,200 Crore Investment
At the event, Naidu urged Hero MotoCorp to proceed with its previously announced plant expansion involving an investment of ₹3,200 crore. The 'Global Parts Centre 2.0' foundation-laying marks a significant step in the company's manufacturing footprint in the state.
Naidu noted that women constitute 40 per cent of Hero MotoCorp's workforce and praised women from Andhra Pradesh as hardworking and possessing a quick learning aptitude, framing female workforce participation as a competitive advantage for the state.
Data Centres and Tech Infrastructure in Visakhapatnam
The Chief Minister also referenced the state's emerging technology infrastructure, noting that companies including Google are setting up data centres in Visakhapatnam, though he acknowledged they are 'proceeding cautiously' with regard to resource availability.
'We will provide all the infrastructure required by industries. Companies like Google and others are setting up data centres in Visakhapatnam but are proceeding cautiously regarding data centres, keeping resource availability in mind,' he said.
What to Watch
With 100 GW in agreements signed and a 160 GW target on the horizon, the pace of actual project commissioning will be the key metric to track. Industry observers note that bridging the gap between signed agreements and operational capacity remains a persistent challenge across India's renewable energy sector. The ₹3,200 crore Hero MotoCorp expansion, if executed on schedule, could serve as a benchmark for Andhra Pradesh's broader industrial delivery record under the current administration.
