Andhra Pradesh targets 5 lakh women entrepreneurs under 'Swayam AP'
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Andhra Pradesh government has set an ambitious target of creating 5 lakh women entrepreneurs through the 'Swayam AP' initiative, with Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Monday, 6 October 2025 directing officials to accelerate efforts toward the economic empowerment of Self-Help Group (SHG) members. The push, reviewed at his camp office in Amaravati, brings together financial support, market linkages, digital commerce, and institutional training under a single integrated framework.
What 'Swayam AP' Involves
Naidu instructed officials of the Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty (SERP) and the Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA) to extend full support to the initiative and actively seek assistance from corporate organisations. He also urged officials to encourage women interested in self-employment to explore franchise-based business opportunities.
A comprehensive plan has been structured around five pillars: building a support system from the village level to global markets; identifying and converting opportunities into viable businesses; extending financial support through loans amounting to ₹68,585 crore; delivering capacity-building and business-management training in partnership with leading institutions; and developing an integrated entrepreneurship plan with the participation of more than 60 organisations.
The 'Swayam AP' Brand and Market Push
Naidu directed officials to consolidate the thousands of products manufactured by Development of Women and Children in Rural Areas (DWCRA) women under a common 'Swayam AP' brand, supported by standardised quality norms, modern packaging, e-commerce platforms, signature stores, and an integrated marketing system. He stressed that products made by DWCRA women must reach global markets.
Notably, sales of 'Swayam AP' products through signature stores and the Flipkart platform are set to commence from 15 October 2025. Officials also noted that SHG women currently produce more than 23,000 products across sectors including food, handicrafts, and textiles.
National Saras Mela 2026: A Major Showcase
The Chief Minister directed officials to make the National Saras Mela 2026 — being organised for the first time in Vijayawada from 15 to 31 October — a flagship showcase of women's empowerment. President Droupadi Murmu is expected to formally inaugurate the event. SHGs from across the country are set to operate 600 stalls, with an estimated one lakh visitors per day. Women entrepreneurs and women Members of Parliament from across the country are to be invited to participate.
Financial Backing and Institutional Support
Stree Nidhi, a banking institution focused exclusively on women, has already disbursed loans worth ₹4,800 crore to 4.73 lakh women. In addition, incubation programmes are being implemented in collaboration with institutions such as IIM Visakhapatnam and Centurion University, providing women entrepreneurs access to mentorship, markets, credit, and business skills. Successful women entrepreneurs are being connected as mentors for first-time entrants.
Naidu observed that no other state in the country possesses an SHG network as extensive as Andhra Pradesh's — a network that now forms the backbone of the 'Swayam AP' drive. District-level special camps will also be organised to help achieve the 5 lakh target, with the next key milestone being the Saras Mela launch on 15 October.
