Dantewada, March 5 (NationPress) In a significant operation, security forces have successfully neutralised an armed Maoist during an intense confrontation in the densely forested and mountainous region along the Dantewada-Bijapur border in Chhattisgarh, as reported by police officials on Thursday.

The Maoist has been identified as Rajesh Punem, a member of the Bhairamgarh area committee, who was wanted with a government reward of five lakh rupees.

Following the operation, the body and seized materials were cautiously transported back to the Dantewada district headquarters while ensuring safety against potential IEDs and further ambushes, employing road-opening parties and area domination tactics, according to the officials.

The operation commenced on March 3 after police received credible intelligence regarding a concealed weapons dump and 'Naxalite' materials located in the hilly terrain between Gumlanar, Girsapara, and Nelgoda villages, under the jurisdiction of the Geedam police station.

A joint task force comprising members of the District Reserve Guard and Bastar Fighters set out around 12:30 pm.

Upon their advance through meticulous searches and securing the surrounding forest areas, the unit encountered unexpected heavy fire from 8 to 10 armed Maoists associated with the Bhairamgarh Area Committee.

The Maoists, strategically positioned in ambush, opened fire using illegal automatic weapons in an attempt to overpower the police unit and seize their firearms.

In response, the security personnel quickly took cover, issued surrender warnings, and, facing ongoing hostility, retaliated with well-aimed fire for self-defense.

This decisive counteraction compelled the Maoists to retreat, allowing them to escape amidst the thick jungle, rugged hills, and encroaching darkness.

A thorough search of the encounter site subsequently led to the recovery of the body of the armed Maoist, along with a substantial arsenal of weaponry and related items, including an SLR rifle, INSAS rifle, pistol with magazine, a walkie-talkie set, SLR and INSAS magazines, live rounds, and cartridge cases.

All security personnel returned safely, marking a successful outcome for the anti-Naxal operation, as confirmed by the Dantewada district police.
