Arrest of K. Annamalai in Coimbatore: A Blow to Democracy, Claims TN BJP

Chennai, Dec 21 (NationPress) Tamil Nadu BJP spokesperson and senior figure ANS Prasad has declared that the detention of state BJP president K. Annamalai and party activists during a non-violent 'Black Day' demonstration in Coimbatore on Friday (December 20) constitutes a 'murder of democracy' orchestrated by the DMK administration.

In a statement to the press, Prasad expressed that the BJP organized this protest to bring attention to the anti-people and divisive policies of the DMK regime under Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.

He accused the DMK government of harboring terrorists and violent elements. The demonstration aimed to condemn the DMK for permitting a grand funeral for Al-Umma founder Basha, who was a convict in the 1998 Coimbatore bomb blast case, serving a life sentence. The blasts resulted in the loss of 60 lives.

Prasad pointed out that the police intentionally refused to grant permission for the peaceful rally, which saw participation from Tamil Nadu BJP president Annamalai, BJP National Women’s Wing president Vanathi Srinivasan, Hindu Munnani leader Kadeswara Subramaniam, and various other senior figures.

The BJP leader criticized the DMK government for detaining these leaders and party members, labeling it a blatant assault on democracy.

“The DMK police permitted a grand funeral for Basha, the head of the banned terrorist group Al-Umma. This individual, who was convicted in the Coimbatore bomb blasts, was celebrated as a hero and martyr. Such actions set a perilous precedent that undermines law and order,” Prasad asserted.

He further contended that glorifying convicted terrorists as heroes represents a more egregious crime than terrorism itself.

“Presenting murderers and individuals involved in terrorist activities as heroes is utterly unacceptable,” he said, calling on the Tamil Nadu government and police to rethink their decisions.

Prasad characterized the 'Black Day' demonstration as a patriotic and nationally driven initiative aimed at revealing the misdeeds of the state government and raising awareness among students, youth, and future generations.

He stated that the arrests symbolize an abuse of power by the DMK government and urged the administration to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

“The unlawful arrest of Annamalai and party workers, who conducted the march with honorable intentions, will not be forgiven by the people of Tamil Nadu,” Prasad declared. He committed that the BJP would persist in exposing the purportedly anti-people and hazardous actions of the DMK government with public backing.
