Chennai, March 13 (NationPress) Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai has claimed that the state is becoming progressively unsafe due to the deteriorating law and order situation.

In a statement on X, Annamalai expressed dismay over the recent homicide of a couple employed as agricultural workers in Unjapalayam village near Avinashi in Tiruppur district.

He underscored prior violent incidents in the region, stressing the declining security conditions.

Reflecting on past occurrences, Annamalai recounted that a family of three was mercilessly murdered in Semalai Goundenpalayam in 2024, yet the culprits remain unpunished. Likewise, in 2023, a group invaded a residence near Palladam and killed four individuals.

“The law and order environment in Tamil Nadu has plummeted to such a level that offenders, without hesitation, are breaching homes and taking lives,” he remarked.

He further contended that persistent crimes, including sexual assault, homicide, illegal drug activities, and burglary, are rendering the state unlivable.

Annamalai accused the ruling DMK government of undermining the police force, asserting that the public's trust in law enforcement has eroded.

He claimed that police personnel are unable to operate independently due to political meddling.

He also referred to his previous protest against the DMK following the rape of a second-year engineering student at Anna University on December 23, 2024. During that time, Annamalai pledged not to wear shoes until DMK governance in Tamil Nadu was terminated. He even flogged himself six times outside his home as a symbolic gesture against what he termed the “evil” rule of the current administration.

The BJP leader condemned the Tamil Nadu police for disclosing the FIR in the Anna University rape case, which led to the exposure of the victim's identity. He alleged that this was a deliberate act.

Annamalai also asserted that the suspect, Gnanashekaran, was absent from the police’s rowdy list despite his criminal past.

He claimed this was due to his ties with DMK officials and provided what he described as evidence of the suspect’s connections with the ruling party.

Moreover, he accused the DMK of trying to distract from the law and order crisis by promoting a false narrative about a North-South divide in the state.

It is worth noting that Gnanashekaran, a street biryani vendor, was apprehended by the Chennai police for allegedly raping the Anna University engineering student.

According to police documentation, the incident transpired when the victim and her male companion were seated in a secluded section of the campus after attending a midnight Christmas mass at a nearby church.

The suspect reportedly attacked the male companion, severely assaulted him, and then dragged the female victim to a nearby shrub, where he assaulted her. The Greater Chennai Police have faced significant backlash following the incident.

Authorities had previously claimed to have enacted stringent security protocols for Christmas celebrations, deploying over 8,000 officers. However, the assault raised doubts about the efficacy of these measures.
