Guwahati, Feb 16 (NationPress) In a remarkable first for Assam's legislative history, a session of the Assembly is slated to occur in Kokrajhar on Monday, marking a departure from the usual Assembly venue in Dispur.
On Sunday, State Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary emphasized that this unprecedented sitting outside Guwahati aims to bring parliamentary democracy closer to the populace.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the groundbreaking decision to hold Assam's inaugural Assembly session beyond the state capital in Kokrajhar has received strong support from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, who are recognized as the architects of peace in the area.
In a media interaction, the Chief Minister remarked that since independence, the Assam Assembly session will be convened in Kokrajhar, a place that was once a center for the Bodoland agitation.
The Budget session's first day will commence with Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya's customary address, while subsequent sessions will be conducted at the permanent Assembly building in Dispur.
This Budget session is set to continue until March 25, with Finance Minister Ajanta Neog presenting the budget for the fiscal year 2025-26 on March 10.
A significant focus of the inaugural sitting will be to enhance the administration of the Sixth Schedule areas, as highlighted by the Chief Minister.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a post on X regarding this special sitting in Kokrajhar, stated, "The NDA governments, both at the Centre and in Assam, have been tirelessly working to empower the Bodo community and meet their aspirations. These efforts will continue with even greater vigor."
The Prime Minister also reminisced about his visit to Kokrajhar, where he experienced the rich Bodo culture and traditions.
Amit Shah, in a social media post, extended his best wishes to the people of Bodoland.
“This marks a pivotal step towards realizing PM Narendra Modi’s vision of accelerating the development of our Bodo brothers and sisters while nurturing their culture, which proudly embodies our civilizational ethos. My heartfelt wishes go out to the people of Bodoland,” said the Home Minister.
Following the resolution of the Bodoland issues, Speaker Daimary noted that the establishment of the Bodo Territorial Council (BTC) has shown that residents of tribal areas now see little difference between Guwahati and Kokrajhar.
The Speaker also encouraged all 126 MLAs to engage in discussions during this historic Assembly session in Kokrajhar, located 226 km west of Guwahati.
The Assembly is set to convene in the BTC hall. The Assam Legislative Assembly was established on April 7, 1937, during its inaugural sitting in the Assembly Chamber at Shillong, the former capital of the composite State of Assam.
However, in 1972, the Assam government opted to relocate the capital to Dispur, Guwahati. Consequently, the first sitting of the Budget Session of the Assam Legislative Assembly took place at the temporary capital in Dispur on March 16, 1973.
