Sydney, March 15 (NationPress) – On Sunday, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the deployment of military personnel to support communities affected by recent flooding in the Northern Territory (NT).
The government has sanctioned assistance from the Australian Defence Force (ADF) to areas around Katherine, located 270 km southeast of Darwin, the territory's capital, to aid in recovery efforts following the catastrophic floods, Albanese shared on the social media platform X.
“To those facing hardships during this time, please know that we stand with you during both the response and recovery phases,” he expressed.
The Northern Territory government has sought help from the ADF, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
Since the beginning of March, the territory has been grappling with severe flooding. Reports from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) indicate that Katherine is experiencing its worst flooding in nearly 30 years, prompting the evacuation of several surrounding remote communities. The floods have also affected homes in Darwin River and devastated agricultural properties, with the waters of Daly River reaching unprecedented levels.
As of now, there have been no confirmed fatalities due to the flooding in the Northern Territory, although two international tourists tragically lost their lives in separate flood-related incidents in Queensland.
The victims, a 26-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman, were en route to the North Burnett region, approximately 250 km from Brisbane, when they were unable to reach their destination amid heavy rainfall and widespread flooding.
An emergency operation involving police, helicopters, and the State Emergency Service began on Wednesday morning, culminating in the discovery of the vehicle they were traveling in, submerged in floodwaters near Kilkivan, 175 km northwest of Brisbane, on Wednesday afternoon local time.
The Queensland Police Service confirmed on Thursday that the bodies of the two individuals were recovered from the vehicle.
