Canberra, Jan 7 (NationPress) The Australian judiciary seems to be an unwitting participant in the Chinese psychological warfare strategy by permitting the highly controversial trio of judges from Hong Kong’s National Security Law to visit Australia and interact with local judicial figures, thereby posing a potential risk to national security. The judiciary in Australia appears unfazed by the verdicts from Hong Kong's “bogus court”, as highlighted in a report released on Wednesday.

“In March of this year, the trio of judges—Hong Kong Chief Justice Andrew Cheung, Justices Roberto Ribeiro, and Johnson Lam—arrived in Australia to participate in the Asia-Pacific Judicial Colloquium in Canberra. These judges are sanctioned for human rights violations under the U.S. legislative bills, The Hong Kong Sanctions Act of 2023 and the Hong Kong Judicial Sanctions Act of 2025,” as detailed in a report by ‘Bitter Winter'.

U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan, one of the sponsors of the Hong Kong Judicial Sanctions Act introduced in May 2025, remarked that in Hong Kong, the Chinese Communist Party has “completely compromised the local judiciary, transforming it into a mechanism of intimidation and injustice…”

As per the report, the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, Sam Mostyn AC, hosted a reception in Canberra on March 23, 2025, for the Asia-Pacific Judicial Colloquium, which was graced by the three judges from Hong Kong’s National Security Law.

“This situation poses significant embarrassment to King Charles III, the Head of State of Australia, whom the Governor-General represents. Notably, the Australian government has consistently advocated for the repeal of Hong Kong’s stringent national security law, the immediate release of political prisoners in Hong Kong—including Australian Gordon Ng and British citizen Jimmy Lai—and has called for the resignation of Australian judges at the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal (Gummow, Keane, and Allsop),” the report noted.

In referencing an article by the Middle East Media Research Institute titled “The Fall of Hong Kong: China’s Strategic Plan to Conquer Hong Kong and Purge It of Its People,” the report quoted Ching Cheong, former deputy editor of the Chinese publication “Wen Wei Po”, as stating that “the Chinese Communist Party is enacting a strategic plan to dismantle Hong Kong via a psychological warfare campaign against its citizens…”

Furthermore, it noted, “The Chinese Communist Party can rely on its supporters within the judiciary of His Majesty’s former penal colony to carry out its agenda. It’s a favorable position, free from Australian media scrutiny,” raising concerns regarding foreign influence within the Australian judiciary.

Point of View

It is vital to approach this situation with a balanced perspective. The engagement of Australian judiciary members with judges linked to controversial human rights records poses significant questions about the influence of foreign powers within our legal system. While the legal framework must uphold justice, it is equally essential to maintain a strong stance against violations of human rights.
