Dhaka, Oct 27 (NationPress) The police in Bangladesh have detained at least eight leaders and activists from the Awami League and its associated organizations due to their involvement in a flash mob rally in Dhaka.
On Monday, the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police confirmed that these arrests occurred during operations carried out throughout various areas of the capital from the evening to late night on Sunday.
Initial interrogations revealed that the arrested individuals confessed to taking part in multiple flash marches and organized events under the banner of the Awami League and its affiliates. Legal proceedings against them are now in motion, according to reports from Bangladesh’s prominent Bengali newspaper, ‘Jugantor’.
In a related matter on the same day, the prosecution at the Bangladesh International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) urged the tribunal to formulate charges against Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif along with three other party officials concerning a case of crimes against humanity.
The Chief Prosecutor, Tajul Islam, submitted the proposed charges seeking an indictment order against the accused before the tribunal.
Justice Nozrul Islam Chowdhury, who leads the three-member tribunal, has arranged a defense hearing for Tuesday.
These recent actions are part of a larger crackdown on Awami League leaders and their supporters initiated by the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.
Just last week, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested over 131 leaders and activists from the Awami League and its associated groups for conducting flash processions throughout the capital.
In response to these events, the Awami League condemned the coordinated assaults and mob violence perpetrated by both the police and political party members against their peaceful rally, criticizing the indiscriminate arrests of their leaders and supporters.
The Awami League claimed that a systematic wave of mob violence was unleashed against its members participating in a peaceful procession, which they view as an ongoing persecution of the party. Reports indicate that many participants suffered serious injuries from these brutal attacks, with some even being denied medical assistance.
The party has also alleged that several members were kidnapped or forcibly disappeared, with ransom demands made for their safe return.
Expressing their concerns, the Awami League asserted that the members are being subjected to cruel and inhumane repression as they strive for a “just struggle” to restore democracy and protect the rights of the people.
