Dhaka, Aug 1 (NationPress) The Bangladesh Awami League officially declared on Friday that throughout the month of August, the party, alongside associated and aligned social, cultural, and political entities, will conduct a variety of programs to commemorate the 50th martyrdom anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and National Mourning Day on August 15.
All units of Awami League—covering district, metropolitan, upazila, thana, municipality, union, and ward branches—are encouraged to carry out relevant initiatives that align with the central schedule. The planned activities for August include a blood donation campaign, discussion meetings, and commemorations of the birth anniversary of Shaheed Sheikh Kamal at the Abahani Club premises and Banani graveyard.
In a post shared on X, Awami League expressed, "To honor the 50th martyrdom anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and National Mourning Day on August 15, the Bangladesh Awami League will conduct a series of solemn programs throughout the month, reflecting our respect and love. All Awami League units are called upon to implement related programs in accordance with the central plan."
The month-long activities will also feature a blood donation drive, discussion gatherings, and prayer meetings organized by the Bangladesh Krishak League.
As per the schedule released by Awami League, a discussion meeting addressing the anniversary of the nationwide serial bomb attacks is slated for August 17. A tribute and discussion at the Awami League central office to honor the victims of the horrific grenade attack will occur on August 21. On August 24, tributes and prayers will be held at Banani graveyard for Shaheed Ivy Rahman, a victim of the August 21 grenade attack.
Tributes will also be given at the grave of the National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam on his death anniversary at the Dhaka University Mosque premises on August 27. On August 30, both Dhaka North and South Awami League will host a discussion meeting in remembrance of National Mourning Day. The Bangladesh Chhatra League will conduct a virtual discussion on National Mourning Day on August 31, with former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as the Chief Guest.
The Awami League stated that August has been marked by some of the most tragic events in the nation’s history, including brutal assassinations and the dreadful grenade attack. They reminded that August 15 is recognized as National Mourning Day, commemorating the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the majority of his family members by a group of reactionary assassins in 1975.
In its statement, the party commended former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her efforts in restoring the rule of law and ensuring justice. It noted that she initiated trials against war criminals despite facing significant opposition and conspiracies. The statement criticized anti-liberation forces led by Muhammad Yunus for their involvement in the restructuring of the ICT Tribunal and conducting a mock trial against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and other Awami League leaders.
The statement further elaborated, "This month has been marked by some of the most tragic events in our history—including brutal killings and the abhorrent grenade attack. In August of the previous year, anti-liberation and anti-state forces—fueled by Pakistani ideology—illegally seized power through a deep-rooted domestic and international conspiracy, hindering the path to a prosperous Bangladesh and closing off all avenues for opportunity."
The party condemned the Yunus-led administration for the deteriorating law and order situation in Bangladesh, asserting that the safety and livelihoods of the populace are in jeopardy.
Awami League remarked, "Under the strong leadership of his daughter Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh gained global recognition as a developing, dignified nation that is free from hunger and poverty. However, that vision has now been shattered. Our national capabilities and economy have collapsed. The safety of the populace is in serious jeopardy, and the law and order situation has worsened. Citizens no longer feel secure."
The party concluded, "By seizing power undemocratically and violating the sacred Constitution, the fascist forces led by Yunus have robbed the people of their voice and freedom. A climate of fear hangs over the country. Yet, this wall of fear must be dismantled through ideals and courage. We must convert the sorrow of August into strength, ignite the torch of resistance, and herald a new dawn of hope."
