Dhaka, Aug 14 (NationPress) In a continuing crackdown on the Awami League party of Bangladesh under the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, multiple party leaders were apprehended by the police in Dhaka. They are suspected of orchestrating anti-government activities on August 15, a date that signifies the 50th death anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Among those detained was Aminur Rahman Selim, the Assistant Personal Secretary to former Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque. This arrest is linked to a case concerning an alleged assault on students and the public in the Manikganj district, as reported by local media on Thursday.
Manikganj Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) S M Aman Ullah confirmed that a total of eight individuals, including Selim, a former MP from the Manikganj-3 constituency, were arrested during raids conducted in various locations on Wednesday.
Other notable arrests included prominent Awami League leaders Mohammad Ali Chowdhury, Nurul Islam Nuru, Mosharraf Hossain, Mohammad Raju, Imran Mahmud Iran, Nizam Bepari, and Azim Mia.
According to OC Aman Ullah, the individuals were allegedly planning to execute several anti-government programs on August 15. He indicated that they were also implicated in cases related to alleged assaults on student protesters during last July's demonstrations.
It is reported that the detained individuals will be brought before the court on Thursday after completing the necessary legal formalities.
In response, the Awami League condemned the Yunus-led interim government for failing to honor the 50th death anniversary of Bangabandhu on Friday while also cautioning the public against organizing any commemorative events.
The party proclaimed August 15 as National Mourning Day, a day to remember the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and several members of his family.
They criticized the so-called fascist Yunus regime for infringing upon the people's rights and freedom of expression by obstructing their ability to commemorate the death anniversary of the Father of the Nation.
The Awami League expressed that, "August 15 is a day of sorrow, marked by one of the most heinous and brutal assassinations in human history. On this day in 1975, reactionary assassins, enemies of humanity, murdered Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman - the eminent leader of Bangladesh's liberation movement, a champion for the oppressed, and an eternal source of inspiration for the nation, along with most of his family members."
The party has called upon its allies, associated organizations, and various socio-cultural and political groups, both domestically and internationally, to observe National Mourning Day with the respect and solemnity it deserves.
