Dhaka, April 27 (NationPress) In a recent series of law enforcement actions, 56 leaders and activists associated with Bangladesh's prohibited Chhatra League and other affiliated groups of the Awami League have been apprehended across Dhaka, as reported by local media outlets.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) announced on Saturday that, acting on confidential intelligence, several teams executed operations between April 19 and April 25, leading to the arrests, as per United News of Bangladesh.

As part of a sustained political crackdown under the interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus, the detainees are accused of "attempting to undermine law and order" and "instilling fear" among citizens through abrupt protest marches.

Among those taken into custody is Shamim Ahmed Shahid, Joint General Secretary of the Ward-57 Jubo League unit (Kamrangirchar police station); Md. Zia Mia, President of the Ward-33 Jubo League unit (Bongshal police station); Md. Abdur Rob Patwari, Vice President of the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Thana Awami League unit; along with several former Chhatra League leaders and high-ranking members from Awami League affiliates such as Jubo League, Swechchhasebak League, Krishok League, and Sramik League.

Authorities noted that one of the arrestees, Md. Abed Ali Sheikh, is implicated in a case concerning an arson assault on a military vehicle in Gopalganj.

Another arrested individual, Mohammad Zakir Hossain Sagar, is linked to a case involving the 2015 attack on former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia's motorcade.

Several other detainees, including a leader named Imon, reportedly face multiple charges recorded at various police stations throughout Dhaka.

The arrests followed a flash procession earlier this month organized by the Awami League in Khulna city, which apparently defied interim government directives aimed at prohibiting such demonstrations.

Reports indicate that the rally, held under the title of 'Bangladesh Awami League Khulna District Unit', marked the first such event in the region since the fall of the Awami League government last August.

Videos from the protest, as reported by the country's prominent daily Prothom Alo, showcased attendees carrying a banner adorned with portraits of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Sheikh Hasina.

Protesters were observed chanting slogans like, "Sheikh Hasina, we are not afraid, we have not left the streets", "Sheikh Hasina's government is needed again and again", and "Sheikh Hasina will return like a hero."

Following the Khulna rally, the Awami League reportedly sought to organize similar flash processions across various regions of Dhaka.

The Detective Branch (DB) affirmed that all individuals arrested are undergoing "due legal procedures" and stressed that operations to "prevent flash processions" and suppress activities of "banned" organizations will continue.
