Awami League Voices Alarm Over Political Detentions and Custodial Deaths in Bangladesh
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Dhaka, March 3 (NationPress) The Awami League of Bangladesh raised serious concerns on Tuesday regarding the ongoing mass detentions and custodial fatalities of political leaders and activists nationwide, asserting that these actions infringe upon fundamental rights and jeopardize justice and the rule of law.
The party accused the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) government of emulating the previous Muhammad Yunus-led interim administration by exploiting state resources to engage in "repression, torture, and suppression" designed to stifle dissent and pursue political retribution.
According to the Awami League, the alarming trend of mass detentions and fatalities in custody persists. Instances of repeated arrests, arbitrary remand orders, and alarming reports of custodial deaths are generating widespread discontent and grief throughout the nation.
Recently, female leaders and activists from the party were apprehended in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi without any formal charges or cases filed against them, the Awami League noted.
Focusing on the custodial fatalities of their members, the Awami League highlighted the tragic deaths of Shamikul Islam, a leader and vice president of the party's Gaibandha District chapter, and Shafiqul Islam Khan, President of the Chhatra League, the Awami League’s student wing in Dumki Upazila of Patuakhali district.
"Such overt efforts to silence opposition voices, intimidate dissent, and pursue political revenge are intolerable in a democratic society. Mass detentions and custodial fatalities not only breach fundamental rights but also contradict the principles of justice and the rule of law," the party emphasized.
The Awami League asserted that no one should escape accountability for "extrajudicial repression, inhumane treatment, and insecurity within prisons". They stated, "It is the constitutional obligation of the state to safeguard the life and dignity of every citizen. Every death in custody must undergo a fair, transparent, and credible investigation, and those accountable must face justice."
The recent incidents under the BNP administration highlight the ongoing rift with the Awami League, which analysts believe is indicative of a continuing cycle of political revenge.
The Awami League has repeatedly claimed that deaths in custody and police detention have surged across the nation during the 18-month rule of the previous Yunus-led interim government, transforming "detention into a source of fear rather than protection".
